The Sounds of Surfboy
Does anyone know what instrument or object is making the noise that starts at about 3:12 in Surfboy? It sounds like a horn or something, but it's unlike anything I've heard. I know it sounds weird, but I think that was the moment when I realized how epic Underworld is...I was listening to dubno for the first time many years ago and then that noise just pops out of nowhere. And then it gets even better when the synth kicks in at around 5:00 and then the noise occurs again, but more quietly in the background. God I love that track.

Re: The Sounds of Surfboy
Sounds like someone yelling. very processed, of course.
You made me go back and really listen to Surfboy though. Does anyone else think that the (for lack of a better word) squelching sound that comes in in the background at 5:21 on Surfboy is the same thing that makes the squelches that start at 1:22 on Pearl's Girl (14996 Version)? Also, I only just now realized that Spoon Deep is a Surfboy remix.

I always thought it was someone shouting on top of a cliff into a huge deep valley....but probably very processed.....

Re: The Sounds of Surfboy
tsk tsk for not knowing about the Spoon Deep / Surfboy connection...
I haven't listened to Surfboy in AAAAaaagesss, I might just put Dubno in my car today. Although, truth be told, I never was a fan of that track to begin with. I'll have to check that connection between the PG remix and Surfboy, I never really noticed it. |

Re: The Sounds of Surfboy
I've found that dubno is a great album to listen to when you're driving around at night. I have to drive to North Carolina every year (it's about a 10 hour drive from here) and there's something special when listening to dubno at like 1 am when there's hardly anyone on the road.

Re: The Sounds of Surfboy
Could be nostalgia talking, but "dubnobasswithmyheadman" and the "dar and Long" remixes are very reminiscent of Spring.
Spoonman has never bothered me. In retrospect, it's a bit out of place on Dubno, but after hearing the proto DAT version and the carry-overs from Underworld mk i, nothing is sacred. In a world where i learned of UW after a few albums, i assumed Dubno was an intentional work of genious. Sure, it's close. But in the context of the other tracks floating around at the time, it seems a bit more lucky than ideal. No complaints, though. Surfboy fits just fine.
