Osaka Night 1 - 11/21/07
Wow, what a fantastic show! The boys are back and in fine form.
Setlist: 1. Crocodile 2. Cowgirl/Rez 3. Beautiful Burnout 4. Pearl's Girl 5. Boy Boy Boy 6. Two Month's Off 7. Rowla 8. Glam Bucket 9. Born Slippy .NUXX 10. King of Snake 11. Jumbo Moaner was on the setlist, but they ran out of time. Interesting to note, they are still referring to BBB by its working name also: "Eager Hot One" Yes, Boy Boy Boy. My least favorite track on OwB. The live version didn't help much. I've always found the song angry and oppressive, and it comes off as such even more so when personified live. The only part I liked is the beautiful ending, which seems almost redemptive both for the song, and in the context of the song. They made a few changes for the live version, most notably backup vocals by Rick. Cowgirl was off the hook tonight. They had this awesome 5 minute Cowgirl/Borialis/Rez jam at the beginning and the rest of the song was electric. Rowla was also particularly banging tonight, even more so than New York. Not too many Pricey pieces tonight, although there was a new one I haven't heard before, which I assume was a Price song since it's not on the setlist. The crowd was awesome. It was a packed house and they went absolutely wild for Crocodile and Cowgirl and TMO and Born Slippy. I like how they all lined up in nice little rows on the floor. Made it easy for me to get into the middle and find a spot. Rick collapsed to the ground during the slow part of TMO, and my heart dropped because I thought he had collapsed from sickness. Apparently, he was probably just exasperated at something, most likely the vocoder problems that Mr. Newsham told me later that they were having during TMO. They didn't have any new merchandise for sale, but I did pick up the socks that they didn't have in the U.S. The staff were wearing cool "Oblivion Ball (staff)" shirts. Maybe there will be some available at the Ball. I have pictures and video, but I'm probably not going to be able to post any of it till I get back to the States. I'd like to go tomorrow night also, but it's sold out, and I don't know if there's any way I can get a ticket. I didn't see any scalpers when I went tonight. |

For a Japan show, the setlist isn't very inventive

Yeah, the setlists have been pretty formulaic this tour. I'm hoping for something for Oblivion Ball, but not holding my breath. Maybe they'll change it up for you guys next year.

As Karl mentioned in the diary today, yes, the gear setup has been changed a little bit. Imagine the old setup, rotated 90 degrees clockwise (if you're looking at it from the top), and then another desk added to the right-hand side. Darren spends most of his time at the right desk and the back (where the computers are), and Rick at the left desk (which used to be the front desk).

Re: Osaka Night 1 - 11/21/07
I just pulled this off a Mixi.co.jp page (Japan's version of MySpace.com).
Apparently it is the setlist for Osaka night 2! mmm…skyscraper I love you ??? crocodile Beatiful Burnout cowgirl/rez boy, boy.boy two mouths off Rowla Glam Bucket born slippy nuxx king of snake jumbo Talk about formulaic! In my own experience, I have sensed that UW tends to stick to standards and is a little less experimental when they are on an album tour schedule, but this is almost ridiculous! With the exception of ONE SONG, the setlists for Osaka night 1 and 2 are identical - and practically in the same order!!! Don't get me wrong! I'm happy as hell that Underworld are here doing the Oblivion Ball. I'm just hoping that tomorrow night will be a little less "rock concert" like and a little more "Underworld" like!

Re: Osaka Night 1 - 11/21/07
it's strange, cause they do a lot of these "formulaic" shows with very little surprises, and then suddenly once in a while a they do a show with a lots of mixing and improv and you're like "WTF?". Sometimes they seem to have trouble mixing even two songs into eachother and then the next time it flows like a river.
Well I guess the boys have their good and bad days on stage as well.
