kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
there hasn't been a thread on this yet and i know some of you have it. what do you think?
at first i wasn't too impressed, but the more i listen (especially on a proper home system, not headphones), the more i like it. it's so sad and gravelly, and Spaceape's vocals add a crucial element to dubstep. the sequencing is also very good. |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
in brief; i like this disc in my iPod when a song pops up on random. it's basically Tricky - Maxinquay for today's scene. i'd much prefer it if Spaceape wasn't on every track. he has exactly 1 delivery style and it gets very boring, both lyrically and stylistically, after about 5 minutes. i have heard the complete album about 3 times straight through since that's usually how i give LPs a chance. kode 9 is great as a producer but he doesn't need some ignorant mc rambling pseudo dread-filled verses to make the music interesting. it's not half as interesting as the Burial LP and nowhere near as diverese as Boxcutter. Spaceape is talentless and should worship Kode 9 for the rest of his life for giving him this exposure he so obviously does not deserve.
it's mixtape material, but not suitable for a complete listen. at least not to anyone who requires their vocals to have some meaning. |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
i agree about Maxinquaye. the thing about Spaceape is that he fills in most of the concepts that Kode9 theorizes about. dubstep's already starting to go the way of techstep, so even though Spaceape's vocals can sound contrived and samey, i'm kind of glad, because Kode9's tunes would sound SO empty without them there. i hear them more as another texture in the music than as an MC on top. apparently they spent a ton of time on the vocal part.
the Boxcutter LP is totally un-diverse! what! |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
i suppose this is the post where i'm supposed to completely blow up and start shouting, but i mostly agree with you. i'm not sure what you mean when you say dubstep is going the way of techstep though. i assume you mean everyone following a very rigid formula and copying ideas (teh wobble).
Boxcutter discussion for another thread? i foresee name calling and tears. |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
nah, this can be the token dubstep thread for all i care.
i actually have no problem with wobble! everyone's hating on Coki for churning out the wobblers, but i think what he's doing is next-level. the techstep comment, i dunno, a lot of new tunes are sounding mostly rigid, abrasive, cynical, and heartless, thanks to new producers who can hear the half-step spookiness in dubstep but none of the groove, vibe, space, all the elements of jungle and 2step that producers like Loefah and Digital Mystikz and Kode9 are 'ghosting' out. i heart the first Boxcutter EP on Planet Mu and the 12" on Hot Flush, and parts of the album, but overall the LP sounded kinda overbaked. and he uses so many of the same sounds throughout, like that Boymerang break and the squelch fart, and the whole thing sounds so pointlessly shiny. it's alright though, good in the mix. |

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
i have this, and i'm liking it, but i'm not really "in" it. there's a different level with records that you (or maybe just me) attatch something (an image, a style, a way of thinking, an attitude, or all of that combined into something vague) to, rather than just admiring a good record based on what it's doing. i tend to drop the latter much more readily, so i need a few more spins with it because i think "kingston" and "backward" are my way in right now.

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
I took a long time to reply to this thread because I wasn't sure what my opinion was, and I had to reflect on BLD's criticisms. Personally, I don't find them that relevant, in that, as kid cue says, I take them more for their texture than their lyrics.
I think this album is great, honestly. It's not great in that I don't want to listen to it over and over again, and it doesn't get me all excited, but it does what it does in a way that makes it totally different than any other record that I have. Nothing else has quite the same atmosphere, which is an accomplishment, and it is superbly executed.

Re: kode 9 + spaceape - memories of the future
unfortunately, i can't seperate the lyrics like you can. i see them as an unecessary piece. i'll state again, that i listen to instrumental music nearly 90% of the time and much prefer a song with no vocals to songs with vocals. these lyrics are horrible. cocteau twins use lyrics as a layer, Spaceape's are just fake ass ramblings with no point. i love the music, but the lyrics mean this CD will not get played, in full, ever again. if this album were instrumental, it would have much higher repeat value. also, if spaceape weren't ignorant and 1 dimensional, the lyrics would be tolerable. unfortunately, like MC Conrad rode Good Looking into the grave, Spaceape will usher this LP into gimmick status in less than 12 months.
