I want to like Prince...
... I really do! Purple Rain was one of the seminal albums of my youth. His earlier stuff still brings a little nostalgic shiver when I hear it, and a smile to my face. I kind of lost interest when he started losing the plot, imo, with the "Artist Formerly Known As.." bollocks. But I thought he'd grown out of all that. Clearly not though - I just wish he would stop behaving like a complete tw@t! and realise that if you start restricting your fans to this extent, you will end up with none. Idiot.

oh i hate prince. when he talks about his "art" he is unbearable. like he wrote 9. symphony or something. critics and press should stop acting like he is steve reich/philip glass. he was just a decent soul pop artist who wrote decent songs. with very bad taste.

Re: I want to like Prince...
i was at the O2 to see Prince live (21 days in London tour), and the security was mental, you had to check your cameras in before entering, i knew there was no cameras, so didn't take mine, but some people even had their phones checked in due to their photo taking abilities,

i didn't have to but then i didn't want to take any pictures, but the security in the venue were like nazis - any phone in view was either confiscated or the person reprimanded for using it...

as for the show and Prince himself, it was good, but also disappointing

Prince loves himself and he knows it...and proceeded to tell us how much we loved him all the time....

he was on stage for probably about 1.5 hours... considering the number of hits he has had that was definitley not long enough...

and he kinda kept reminding the audience who they'd come to see, and how many hits he had, despite not actually playing them all

in fact in one segement he played solo on an electric keyboard, kept starting songs then stopping saying 'nah you don't wanna hear that' - even if it was a classic... and

'i don't know if i have any more hits'

in all he played about 15 songs in 15 minutes in a crappy medely that meant afterwards we knew we were not going to get the full songs... what a let down

what he did play in full was brilliant, but if he'd spent less time bigging himself up and saying he wasn't going to play his hits he could have played at least three more songs...

in his defence apparently there was an aftershow party, which you had to pay either £25 or £75 per ticket for (ontop of the gig ticket - a reasonable £31.21)

at this show Prince turns up (although this is not guarenteed) and he plays an exclusive set of jazzier versions of his songs and covers...

now from what i understand - because i didn't go to this aftershow treat - is that Prince was amazing, much more intimate and played between 90 and 180 mintues... of songs...

i know he'd likely have been milking it too there, but i suspect that thats a better show than the actual show i saw

he is good but is way too up himself

i'm glad i saw him, but thats it... i've seen him and am happy with that

he is a weird guy

Re: I want to like Prince...
Prince is one of my favorite artists of all time. His vision may not have aligned with my tastes since "Sexy MF" (with a few exceptions) but wow, between 1977 and 1992 the dude was UNSTOPPABLE.

He does make some pretty baffling decisions and comments but hey, as Tony Wilson once said: "He's a musician, which means he's an asshole. They have to be."

Re: I want to like Prince...
i never met him, but at a very small local ski hill near ottawa he showed up for an afternoon/evening for a wedding once. my friend and his little sister (like 5 or something) were walking out of the hotel (as their mom worked there), as prince came in. i guess prince was all super dressed up and held the door open for the little sister to walk out, and said something... then the sister asked my friend who the crazy man was after he was gone.

anyways, thats funny, and i think it is cool that he held the door open for her.
