The leading light of cinema-as-art, imo. Through A Glass Darkly was a masterpiece.

Very sad indeed.
I'm surprised there wasn't already an op-ed piece by Allen. Maybe he'll write something for the New Yorker. The following was posted on the NY Times website today though. It's parts of a book review written by Allen in 1988 about Bergman. link |
