My brain made a curious observation...
So, I was listening to "Second Toughest... " today, and just as "Pearl's Girl" ended I started to hum "Luetin" inside of me...

'Silly boy', I thought. 'This isn't "A Hundred Days Off"!'

But just as "Air Towel" started, I realized why. They're kind of similar! Now, some of you may have noticed this before (and most of you probably disagree with me), but it was the way I realized this similarity that struck me as interesting.

Do our brains realize more about music than we do?

Yes, I really do think so. Music is unexplainable. It's fucking amazing.

And yeah, the Luetin and Air Towel similarity is clear to me. Both are really good songs.

I don't know but I haven't really add something to this thread but who the fuck cares.

well, surely if our brains realize it, then that sort of implies that we realize it too don't you think?
i do often find myself "mixing up" UW tracks in my head though. Most of UW's music seems to work together well this way, which is particularly obvious when they play live and actually mix up elements of different tracks (i really love that they are doing this a lot again, after they sort of abandoned this style of mixing during the AHDO tour)

Re: My brain made a curious observation...
yea - there are some similarities within the tracks - and you can find it with many of other UW tunes

but about things your brain knows but you don't -

that literally happens constantly. I forget the name of the term, it's been about 2 years since I had my "Memory and Cogntion" course. But it basically boils down to attention.

"Everyone knows what attention is" - but at the same time, it's quite difficult, some thought at one time (which actually wasn't so long ago) believed it was impossible, as it'd be difficult to study all the things that you're not conciously thinking about...

but yea - you're constantly processing the world around you, and what's not around you constantly, you just aren't focussed on it.

No, not really... I don't believe that I AM my brain. It's just an instrument that I use imperfectly

Now the similarity of the tracks is really just the few tones at the beginning, and I guess it's no mystery that two songs made by essentially the same people would have such similarities.

I just found it interesting to discover it this way

Well, actually, the similarity is in the main keyboard line that forms the entire musical backbone of the song, so it's not really just a few tones in the beginning. The real question is, why don't they do a medley of "Air Towel" and "Luetin" live?

Yes... what he said

The important thing was that I expected through experience an "Air Towel" sounding song, and my brain suggested that I start humming "Luetin", as a way of having its little fun with me...

Re: My brain made a curious observation...
My brother is kinda into the band, although all he's heard is the Everything, Everything live CD and a few MP3s he's downloaded. We were driving somewhere in my car and I had the Second Toughest CD on, and when "Sappys Curry" came on, he said it sounded a lot like "that short song on the live CD", which is the ending of "Cups" of course. Anyone else hear it?

Right now, i'm hearing a lot of Rez/Cowgirl elements (beats, synth bass, twinkly leads) in Underworld's remix of "Sound System" by Drum Club, though this could be a product of their style at time these tracks were made.

Ah yes, "Air Towel" and "Luetin"...they go together so nicely it seemed obvious to mix em... i'd remixed them together a few years back as "Luetin (AViD throws in the AirTowel)"

(p.s. shameless commercial...you can still get ithat remix as part of my collected UW remixes here:
