DJ Krush - Kakusei
Trying to get some actual music discussion going:
After owning this album for some time, I couldn't really get into it when I first heard it. Only recently started to appreciate it. His style is quite deep and very minimalistic, leaving a lot of space between the sounds. The reason that I couldn't get into it first, was because I love DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and people somehow keep comparing DJ Shadow and DJ Krush. Personally, I think their style varies a lot and are not comparable. DJ Krush's style might feel very bland at first, but give it some time and you will appreciate it. What I like about Kakusei, is that it is a very consistant album. Every track is part of the whole concept and it all flows quite well. Only "Rust", with its oldskool and messy recording has a different vibe than the rest. The track is one of the highlights of the album though: simple but with a steady beat and a sweet vibe. "The Kinetics" is a fun track with some oldskool scratching in it, also pay attention to the sample in the middle of the track. The track that really stands out for me, is "No More". A really nice (saxophone?) melody is repeated and supported by one of the phattest basslines I know. Further into the track are actually some subtle acid sounds and near the end he adds some really nice delays to the beat.
