Mixing gear

Hey,

Already a long time i work with music... but you could call me old school...
yes , i started with a 3 channel mixing deck and 2 turntables

Now , i would like to express myself in making also some mixes of the new things i like... but, and now comes the question, how do i translate my old skills in the new generation gear (HW /SW)

The question is .... what do you use to make your mixes, compilations, etc.

Does any of you guys still mixes manually, of are the new style beatsyncro systems a must ?

Hey Pappie, there's no school like the old school! That you began mixing on turntables gives you a leg up on everyone that has only relied on software to auto-beatmatch. You know the technique and what makes a good set. But still, software allows you to spend less effort on "getting it technically right" and instead picking just the perfect songs.

That said, i don't use Ableton (yet!). My "mixing" is through Sony Acid software, whereby i beatmap each file and then beatmatch the waveforms manually as the tracks play, rendering the mix. Lately, i've also been checking out Torq M-Audio tools, which is automatic in terms of beatmatching and accesses your hiole mp3 library, but also incluses a mixer-type tool and some old style effects. Kinda cheesy, perhaps, but i like it! More professional voices around here will give you better advice. But mine is to use a pogram that "feels" right and instinctive to you. There's lots of software that might do wonders, but the set-up or UI is awkward.

Pappie, I recommend you buy Traktor (or Traktor Scratch if you want a vinyl interface). Traktor provides the closest approximation of djing out of all the software i've used.

I also recommend you get a good external midi controller to use as a mixer. i'm using one that looks like a regular dj mixer but controls the software. these are pretty common now if you search for midi dj mixer or something similar.

I use the following:

3x Pioneer CDJ-800s
Allen & Heath Xone:62
Pioneer EFX-500

Though over the last couple of months, two of my CDJs have died of old age. Until I can afford new replacements I've bummed a MIDI controller from a friend of mine and have been working on a few Ableton sets, really cutting up tracks and rearranging them. I can see the appeal and am having a blast with it, but I certainly enjoy my actual decks more than software.

i used the old school stuff, now i use traktor dj studio 3 on a mac (offcourse) a xone 92 mixer (the best) and a dx2 d-faderfox controller (faderfox.de)
works fine
