Re: The Beatles - White Album
I dunno if that's gonna be a good idea about going from the beginning to the end... just saying that from a monetary standpoint though.
I mean - it'd be neat, but you'd prolly end up buying albums that you'll only listen to once ...anyways... I was never a big beatles fan whatsoever. But the White Album was my favorite album of theirs, after a while however, I kinda outgrew it. I think it's just a bit too much 'all around the place' - like it could've been sequenced much better. What really made me a fan of the beatles was when I finally heard "Tomorrow Never Knows" - which is tucked away on Revolver, which I think is much much much better than the White Album. From what I've observed though - it seems like Sgt. Pepper, which essentially a continuation of the Revolver sound is much more prefered (which I've never understood) & everyone wants to forget about the Magical Mystery Tour album. Probably b/c that's the real "weird" album... it even has a song on it that could have been a Dj Shadow track (if you ignore the years between them) -> Blue Jay Away |

Re: The Beatles - White Album
I really have a problem with The Beatles; I have "One"(compilation) but I don't love it. I totally agree with their merit and influence in the history of music. I really like The Who, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen(my favourite), The Clash, but I can't make it with The Beatles...
Is there a therapy for that ? Please help me...

Re: The Beatles - White Album
I was never a massive Beatles fan. However, I think there's a track on Revolver that must have influenced the Chemical Brothers. I don't have it, and I can't remember what it's called, but if you've heard it you'll know what I mean - it sounds unbelievable. For that alone I'd like to have a good listen to Revolver.
I liked the Clash though. And some of Joe Strummer's solo stuff is amazing (especially Streetcore).

Re: The Beatles - White Album
I think the Beatles absolutely deserve their reputation as the most important rock band ever, and I think most people could find something to love amid their extensive catalog. My favorite album of theirs is Abbey Road, which is also the last thing they recorded as a group. I'm also a fan of George Harrison's early solo work. It's amazing, though, when you get into their stuff, how you realize that everything everyone is doing now was done by them first. Just listen to "I Am the Walrus" and it's like hearing a Beck song from 40 years ago.
I remember when my brother got the White Album for Christmas when we were kids, and we both got sick shortly after that and were stuck at home for like a week, and we listened to it over and over again. When our dad asked us what we had been up to lately, I said "we've been sick, we mostly sat around taking pills and listening to the White Album," and he said "That's exactly what I used to do." I'm not of the opinion that they were the BEST band ever... that's subjective, and I think most of their ideas have by now been improved upon by others... but it pisses me off when people my age act like they're too hip for The Beatles. It just demonstrates a really sad lack of perspective.

Number 9
Number 9 Number 9 'One' is not the best collection of their music. The later period is not very well represented. Quote:

Re: The Beatles - White Album
yea- the very song that I was talking about
but yea - their number one hits were actually (in my opinion) actually their worst songs - like you've heard them all too many times, and well... none of them were really that interesting in sound either ...just pop songs of the time |

Re: The Beatles - White Album
i can fully appreciate how/why the beatles are considered overrated or inaccesible by a lot of people, because i used to be the same. i dunno what did it, but now i love the beatles, the way that they all george had a different style to paul+john combo. and some of the production techniques like double tracking some of the instruments, and experimenting with reverse tape effects were practically invented by the boys.
i agree that compliling a beatles collection is ridiculously expensive, mainly because they are never in sales. one of my fave releases is "past masters vol.2" which was a collection of all of their b-sides and stuff that never got an album release in the uk. worth it for paul mcartney doing an impression of his lounge singer dad on "you know my name" tomorrow never knows - drum loop is sampled by the chems in setting sun, and the lyrics "turn off your mind, relax and float downstream" has been used in a really warped and slowed down way as a walk-on intro for their current tour.

Re: The Beatles - White Album
Caprice; from what i know (which isn't a huge amount, really, but bear with me) i'd avoid their really early stuff and skip to mid-period - from the mid-sixties.
i find the 'beat-music' stuff pretty hard to take in anything other than small doses. it's fine as throw-away pop music, but their later work has much more substance and depth (to my ears, at least) I'm of the opinion that Sgt. Pepper's is a little overrated, actually. There's some fantastic songs on there - Getting Better, Lovely Rita, A Day In The Life - but it doesn't seem to hold together particularly well as an album. My personal favourites are Help!, Rubber Soul and Revolver, all well worth checking out, probably in reverse order. enjoy!! |
