Tomato: A Contemporary Approach to Visual Music in Audio-Visual Art (Underworld)
Hi there everyone! For those of you who are new and have never seen me on here before my name is Dave, I am an Art Historian/Web Designer and Developer/Musician/DJ/Photographer/Confused person from Dublin, Ireland.
This time last year I had just completed an Undergraduate Study on Visual Music (Abstract visual representations of music) in audio-visual art, with a special focus on Tomato and Underworld. The study was restricted to 10,000 words so it is a bit brief in places as I try to cover a ton of different areas, however I am still writing about this stuff in my spare time so I may get round to continuing a more elaborate study on Tomato. This Study contains information on Tomato's work with Underworld, primarily through their video work in the 90s and their UnderworldLive show as we know it today. It also contains an extremely detailed interview with Graham Wood in three Appendices at the end of the study (That easily doubles the word count!). In that interview are some fascinating insights into the workings of Tomato and some of Graham's own ideas and processes. This study simply would not have been possible without his help. I'd like to thank him publicly here. Also I would like to thank Yan, Todd, Mike, Matt and Constanza who all helped me immensely with materials and information throughout. You'll see that I thank the community too ![]() It has been a year since I finished this study.. I think it is about time I share it with you all. Please take note that the average reader of this study is not an Underworld fan, I am sorry if my approach may seem a bit simplistic at times however I had to approach it with a mind to total ignorance of the band on the part of the reader. The Images document is not included due to copyright.. I have put together a Youtube playlist for the relevant Underworld Videos http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...eature=edit_ok but you should be aware of them anyway ... pretty much any other film I mention should be available on youtube. So here it is.. enjoy! LINK::: http://issuu.com/daviddonoghue/docs/...olor=%23222222

Ah, this is really amazing, Dave. Very nice work! I've only skimmed it so far, but it looks like there's a lot of great stuff in there (one gem: there is a music video for Kittens).
The only question I have is, how do I download this thing for later reading?! |

Wow! Thank you for sharing it.
My vacation starts soon so I´m looking forward to read it all the way. The Wassily Kandinsky quote is epic indeed and the Graham Wood interview will be the healing to my wounded soul

In terms of Downloading I am not going to enable that on the PDF just yet. One of the reasons I held back so long on making it available was due to permissions on the Images and also that I got the interview based on an academic premise. By keeping it read only it remains as a reference rather than something that can be spread around to an unlimited amount of people. Also I may be putting together a digital publication for articles like this from Irish pseudo-academics in the Irish Arts world (Through my website ArtHub.ie) so I would at least like to keep it confined to the Dirty Community until then. Hope you understand!
