Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
really?

i thought it was kind of a step back. i dont know if i've gotten used to him so it's no longer this wild ride or if he's changed or what, but i find myself trying to get into it more than getting dragged against my will. a few really heady ones i'm going to play eventually (hopefully we dont repeat!) but i've been kinda ignoring it overall in the last week or so.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
well, in retrospect, I think it has it's moments. what I like about it is that it goes to that wobble place that can get boring, but gets musical while doing so, making it more interesting. It has a great "first time listen" impact... but I am maybe second guessing it's long range listen potential. Definitely some sonic thunder though.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
did you know this guy has a classical music alias?

just learned that a couple of days ago. didnt expect it, but also not surprising.

whats a little surprising is that i was begging for it to have some vocalists attached to see what sort of insanity could be hatched but now that it's done they range from pretty ok to just dire. warming up to more of the instrumentals but still rather deflated about this.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
Hi here !

I'll be playing some new Starkey too in the next Tellings. Like Marshall, I think this album is better, maybe because it's not like to be only a sucession of bangers that the first one seemed to be (or was). And that general "synthy-hop" sound is unique.

Those vocals tracks are nice. Will be buying this one for sure

Who are/is/were Starky?

My other half bought me the new Gorillaz, much as I dislike the mockney one, it's a pretty good album, loving that Little Dragon track Empire Ants.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
Starkey is a dubstep artist located in San Francisco, US. From what I've heard.. he's a wobbler when it comes to dubstep. He makes epic bassline tracks with slutty breaks. That said, the new album (only leaked for now) is pretty musical, and definitely has some great tunes. It's a little scattered--15 tracks with a broad range of sounds...hip hop, vocal pop, gutbomb wobble.... but overall, I think it's worth a purchase.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
I think I have to add that his first album was blessed with that little gem titled " ".

Edit: and he comes from Philadelphia, if I remember well.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
I spoke with a guy yesterday at Amoeba, and he mentioned that Starkey was living here. He might have originated in philly though.

Re: New Starky, New Gorillaz
ah, I see, that explains why looking up Stark(no e)y on discogs led me down a blind alley.
