Landmark Ruling in Lyrical Terrorist Case
... so it is NOT a criminal offence to write poetry about jihad.
Quote:
Giving judgement, Lord Phillips said: "We consider that there is a very real danger that the jury became confused and that the prosecution have rightly conceded that this conviction is unsafe."
He went on to explain how in February this year, the Court of Appeal had studied Section 58 of the Terrorism Act in detail.
It had concluded that an offence would be committed under the act only if a document was of a kind likely to provide practical assistance to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.
Propagandist or theological material did not fall within Section 58, Lord Phillips said.

Thank f00k for that. Freedom of speech still (vaguely) reigns.

Yeah, uh-huh, here in The States, brainbaking(because it's not brainwashing if it's all you've ever known) is quite legal if you have enough money. Too.

but not if you want to hold a sign referring to scientology as a cult.

also,

Ms Malik posted extremist poems on websites under the screen name "the Lyrical Terrorist", but has always insisted they were "meaningless".
bullshit, you cow. stand up for what you wrote and at least admit that you were doing exactly what you were doing. pathetically scrambling for attention by using inflammatory language. admit that your hubris got you in a little hot water rather than being a coward and whining, "but they were meaningless!" no they damn well weren't and everyone knows it. it's cowardly to claim otherwise.

Without wishing to seem that I am rushing to her defence unthinkingly, she is young and was probably absolutely scared shitless when the state machinery rolled into action. Cowardly? Probably. Would I be a coward in that situation? Probably not. Would I have been a coward and recanted on anything I had ever said or done ever at the age of 22 or 23 in that situation? Ohhhhhh yes.
