So this may seem better suited to a forum like "treatment", but to me, Carlin's relentless and irreverent social commentary makes him more of a "world" figure. Not many people could ever be as successful as he was at voicing his largely unpopular opinions on subjects from religion to child-rearing to socially induced shame, and still be so hugely popular a person. His death is a huge loss.
