Ditto on the vp330. Fairly distinctive sound when used with the built-in string sound. Check out
Sound on Sound. There is also an interview from Future Music that goes into a bit more detail about the mods to Karls guitar. As I recall they are pretty much limited to MIDI translation/control additions.
