i understand why underworld want to kiss ass and open for radiobitch on this tour and it will probably gain them some fans, i would even go if i got a free ticket (certainly wouldn't pay the prices they'll be charging), but it's pretty much "worse case scenario" for seeing an Underworld show.
man, looks like someone has run afoul of some online shenanigans before.

i'll just say that ateaseweb (radiohead board) has a wide demographic. many are intelligent. many many many are not. but the music forum, as contradictory and bizarre as some of the things said are, has a pretty good grip on a lot of different music. it's mostly centered around indie/experimental/electronic stuff, but there's so many members with different specialisations that you can keep yourself updated on the latest in a lot of different areas in no time. along with all the pedantry of "i like aphex twin what else is there??!!" there'll be someone else trying to generate some excitement about the new james ruskin. we also talk an awful lot about the releases everyone else gets excited about on the internet too (portishead, lidell, etc), so i'd say the breadth is about as wide as you could reasonably expect it to be.
i'd admit that none of this expansiveness was around pre-kid a, but i was a member there back then too, and the place was pretty damn small.
as for being innovators, we're slooooooowly trying to steer that ship into being "influencers within their group". they sorta made it *not* a complete geek move to put computers in your rock, and the results have only been tangentially related to what they did, but somewhat related nonetheless. i'm pretty sure if you play devils advocate and start talking about how autechre are riding the RH coattails you'll get laughed out of town.

but as for any of this relating to them two playing on the bill, none of this really matters. there'll be a small fraction, like me, who would stubbornly insist on getting it on without reservation. and then theres the other 90% who will at most migle and at worst stay put the entire time. at that point you just have to be in it for yourself and stop being such a damn baby about it.

im personally pleased as all hell this is happening. i'm a huge radiohead fan.
