Me too! Memories of a mis-spent yoof too. When I was in my early 20s, the four must-have albums for the hip pseudo-intellectuals were Bounced Checks -Tom Waits, Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, Cafe Bleu - The Style Council, and The Koln Concert - Keith Jarrett.

(It's Tom Traubert's Blues, btw, the Waltzing Mathilda song.)

Bounced Checks is a great "best of" from the early years, with lovely tracks like the aforementioned Mr Traubert, Burma Shave, Diamonds on my Windshield and the wonderful The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me). I love every note of it.

his album "Mule Variations" is also quite good.

btw - Scarlett Johanson is going to be releasing an album of Tom Waits covers. I originally thought it was going to be total crap - but then I heard that that one guy from TV on the Radio produced it, and Bowie guests on at least 2 tracks means that it can't be COMPLETELY horrible
Will be interesting to hear someone singing his songs rather than growling them, I guess. His voice always did sound like gravel in a blender.
