Re: The beginning of UW mkII?
ok, the story goes...

...and in 1992, they began to see how their earliest interest in Kraftwerk and dub might now be capable of development. Rick asked his brother-in-law, who was an enthusiastic clubber, whether he knew an exciting DJ who might be interested in helping them. He suggested Darren Emerson, a young man who was gaining repuation in pubs & clubs in essex and who live close to Rick and Karl.... (Record Buyer and Mart, april 1999)

"The last thing we did as a seven piece was a tour supporting the Eurythmics in 1989" (KH, Melody Maker January, 1994)

Rick came back to Britain straight after the tour, while Karl stayed in the states, to work as a session musician at Prince's Paisley Park. (See Terri Nunn LP)

He returned home two months later to find Rick knocking out dance tracks, with Darren, who Karl had never met before.

"Karl came back to find me, this teenage lad, sitting in the studio, working with his partner". Chuckles Darren

(all bits from Melody Maker Article)

The trio hit it off immedaiately....and two singles were launched on the independant Junior Boys's Own label, under the name of Lemon Interupt..

Leftfield were the first to appreciate the trio's strengths, employing them to produce a 'Lemon Interupt' mix of their single 'Song of Life (1992)

(info from Record Buyer and Mart Article)

....

The first single to once again use the Underworld name was a limited edition pressing by Tomato, Mother Earth....

(Record Colelctor Dates this release as 1992, after Lemon Interupt's two singles....)

Other interesting bits to note are that Underworld were employed to make music for Darren Emerson's sets, and to use as a test bed for tracks for the Underworld album...(I wonder how much stuff he played was never used, due to poor reactiosn or the likes...)

My $0.02 is that a lot of the early history is very blurred, but most 'recorded' wisdom suggests that the order of releases is as follows, and interviews and commenst from band members seem to suggest that these bits of info are pretty accurate:

1989 - Last performance as a seven piece on Eurythmics tour
1990 - performance as Underworld Mark I - old tracks, demos...(tape dated 1990.00.00 only - may well in fact be left over from around 1989...)
1990 - Rick calls up Darren & start working together...
1991 - is all a bit vague - Emerson Djing...R&K set up Tomato - spend a lot of time doing Tomato stuff
1992 - put out stuff as Lemon Interupt - Big Mouth / Eclipse & Dirty
1992 - Rick and Darren - devise the 'Steppin' Razor' remix moniker
1992 - Remix Leftfield - Song of Life, as Lemon Interupt and Steppin Razor
1992 - Release Mother Earth / The Hump
1992 - Rick & Karl - finish off the Terri Nunn Album
1992 - Darren Remixes Gat Decor
1992 - Darren & Rick Remix Simply Red's Thrill Me
1993 - Release MMM...Skyscraper

1993 + the rest is pretty much documented....

one of the best articles on the rise of Underworld is in Record Mart & Buyer magazine, April 1999 - in a sdection called Pathways of Underworld....which documents the band from Freur to Underworld in 1999, just prior to BF...
