Re: 2 Bit Pie - 2 Pie Island
While 2 Bit Pie is easily recognizeable as Fluke-based, thanks to Fugler's menacing vocals, their trademark deep rolling synths and the single "Nobody Never", with jubilant vibe/female backing chorus very reminiscent of Fluke's early 90's output, they've added a few new elements:
Jan Burton (of Syntax) sings on several tracks...his voice is close to Fugler's, but crisper, more melodic.
Yuki, a female counterpoint to Fugler, who basically backs him up, but does share vocal responsibilities on the lovely Mote, where his voice creeps out of hers.
Though not exactly cutting-edge, they up the guitars a lot, sort of in the vein of "Snapshot" on Fluke's "Puppy".
They include a spaced-out operatic jam "Soto Mundo", which some have compared to the track by the blue woman in "The 5th Element", except this is better. Very epic.
The combined effect is a well-produced, coherent but still diverse album with plenty of tracks that could have/should have been big singles ("Here I Come" and "Nobody Never" were released but did little). Almosty zero promotion for this record, which is a shame.

Imho, 2 Pie Island ranks pretty well in the Fluke canon, especially if you like their heavier tracks. Albums go something like this:

Risotto 9.5/10
Puppy 9/10
2 Pie Island 8.5/10
Six Wheels on My wagon 8/10
Oto 7.5/10
The Techno Rose of Blighty 6/10
Out (in Essence) = The Peel Sessions 5.5/10
