shit, i just lost my reply.
i was responding to the idea that "anything grates if you listen to it long enough." i don't think this is true. we're conditioned to be skeptical of "stupid, disposable pop," so if we approach it as corporate noise warfare than of course it's only going to get more irritating the longer it sticks around. but we can also accept catchy, pleasurable music that is relevant NOW, if not later, as what it is. clearly a lot of people are doing that.
i know the fact that it's an addicting song (i.e. does NOT get worse over time) for a lot of people says little about its overall quality (i already said i like it because it seems meaningful AND catchy, where the sentiments match up to the sounds), but i also think that we shouldn't always ignore the fact that songs become this popular, either. it's easy to be predisposed to what's on the charts, but this makes it even easier to hear it all the same way. i was really annoyed by the song the first couple times i heard it, then i heard what some people liked about it, then i started to actually listen to it, did a complete 180, etc.
