I've also heard this, and that there actually is a true director's cut (a seventh version) that's complete and ready to go. However, the film, when being made, went way over budget, and ownership of it reverted to the bondsman (I think that's the right term, correct me if I'm wrong.) He didn't get along with the studio and/or Ridley Scott, and he isn't allowing them to release this new version. That's why the only DVD of the film has zero special features.
However, somebody informed me in another thread (brian, maybe, I don't remember) that this year or next year is the 30th anniversary of the film and that he believes the bondsman and the studio finally reached an agreement, and they will be releasing this new version for the occasion. Huzzah.
