In my opinion, when they started out they were doing a very creative and original combination of "banging dance floor friendly sounds" and more melodic styles, as opposed to only doing one or the other in any given track. Consider "Jam Scraper," for instance. It starts out slow and melancholy, then it gradually builds up to an awesome techno breakdown, and then it winds down to the same sort of slow contemplative feeling. Same with "Why Why Why?" On the other hand, "Dark Train" starts out minimalist but then adds the great keyboard melody. That was what I liked about them, they didn't just make dancefloor tunes or "chill-out" tunes or whatever, they made tracks that had forward movement and combined different feels.
