That might be an aesthetic choice on Jackson's part -- this entire project is a big nostalgia-fest for him, it's a childhood dream, and it seems like he's placing a lot of emphasis on blending "cutting edge" CG FX, with traditional, older looks of things. He says something about the way he made the dinosaurs -- that the revised, likely more accurate version of dinos is less fun than the old cinema take on dinos. So, he strives to make his dinos move, sound and act more "funner" than real.
Might be the same with how the CG looks. Everything looks highly stylised, IMO -- too stylised for my tastes. I'm sure there will be some fun moments, though -- the plane sequence over the Empire could be great (and fucking sad, too).
