It's the loudness war. The only things we can do about it is educate others and listen to albums and TV/radio programs that have a sane dynamic range.
Look into ReplayGain if you haven't already (won't help with TV/radio but with CD's).
I don't even watch TV anymore... eztv/online streaming for sports is all I really need.
