owen looks like an astronaut in that photo because they were born a little early (33 weeks) and he needed a cpap to help put some positive air flow on his lungs and encourage him to breathe. not even 24 hours later the cpap was removed and both boys are breathing beautifully on their own.

jacob was born at 9:04 a.m. and owen was born at 9:05. c-section, of course. jacob was 4 lbs 5 oz and owen was 3 lbs 15 oz. they will be in thie hospital probably between 3-6 weeks depending on their progress. being so little they just don't have the fat reserves to help them regulate their own temperatures and the muscles that would allow them to nurse aren't quite strong enough yet. they're improving dramatically so we may end up closer to the 3 week mark than the 6 week mark. i am doing okay, although it was incredibly rough not to be able to hold them right away. when they're that little they whisk them away from you and you don't get to see them or hold them immediately. letting the hours tick by while you wait to see your babies is an incredibly difficult thing to do. plus there's the agony of major abdominal surgery but i'm a tough gal, i'm getting through it.
