That`s one of the reasons why I moved to Japan!
(Although, at the end of the day, I don`t know if it makes much of a difference since Japan is a client state of the U.S.)

Regarding China: 2 years ago, my friend Andy and I went to China for our summer vacation. One day, we went "off the beaten path" and ventured into a hutong neighborhood (the traditional courtyard residences primarily in Beijing). We stopped to eat at a food stall in the hutong area, and every 10 minutes a military van with machine gun guards drove around the corner - looking for dissent from the locals, I guess! I must admit that I was a bit shocked, but I suppose this is normal if you live in a "police state"! The interesting part was that I never saw this armed entourage near the tourist/foreigner occupied area near our hotel!
