i like this new album, bit retro in feel, and much better than the shit Hotel album...

moby is pretty clever, if sometimes a bit pretentious


at least he's trying to appeal to people and works on his art... which can not be said of a lot of other artists....

yeah, i'm shockingly surprised at how good this album is.

It's like he stopped eating beans and tofu or something and made a decent record.

I'm sooo glad to hear that "Last Night" is a step back towards Moby making dance records rather than the adult-contemporary of latter years.

Moby's eponymous first release on Instinct in 1992 was probably the first electronic record that i loved. "everything is Wrong", though a bit ambient in spots, still had a lot of crashing dancefloor cuts. "Play" was cool the first 100 times i heard it, but that's when Moby became a household name and the overexposure began, and now i find a lot of it pretty soft. "18" is color-by-numbers play-redux and "hotel" is just boring. Even the B-sides and Voodoo Child albums in there seemed like he'd lost the groove.
Now, i've only heard the album mash-up and "alice" from the new record, but how great it is to hear some house piano and divas rather than all Moby vox and guitar.
i'll probably wait for a few more reviews then pick this up. Looking forward to danceable Moby again (Does anyone have his "Early Underground" or "Rare" collections? Early 90's hard techno!:D)

Here's what I'll say about "18" and "Hotel"

18 sounded much much much muchmuchmuch better live than on the album
Hotel... was good in parts, but still suffered from that overly dry sound of 18

and yes, Last Night is a vast improvement over those two (oh, I forgot about Baby Monkey... let's just leave that one there) and it has some great tracks, but....


am I the only one who thinks it gets almost a bit too much like early 90's techno? Not that I'm saying that it's bad... and I'll even say that Moby's work from that era pretty much is that only stuff I'll still listen to from back then...

maybe that's why I have this slight nagging feeling about "Last Night." It's a great album, but it almost feels like - instead of progressing that sound into something a bit more fresh... he's just staying in the same realm as before?

...or maybe I've just been listening to too much Kitsune Maison stuff, Digitalism, and... ok, I'll admit it - even Justice... and I almost expect 'new' dance music to sound like that

is he just being safe and giving us what he knows will sell?

Bought this on saturday and have spun it several times... it's a grower. Not as good as EIW, but so much more enjoyable than Hotel and 18, and dare i say, half of Play. I'd give it 6.5/10.

Best cuts: "Disco Lies" - impossibly catchy chorus's been stuck in my head. "Stars" - analog synth and rave-piano goodness. "Sweet Apocalypse" - basic Moby-esque instrumental, but warmer than most from the past few albums. Oh, and "Alice" is okay, not so much into the vocal, but the bassline is fun

Not too crazy about the number of diva vocals, or the crowd samples, which are always weirdly truncated. Though he gets the hi-hats and piano back out there, Moby can't fight his ambient ways, so the last four cuts are still pretty mellow.

I picked this up a couple days ago thanks to the first couple reviews on this thread. Must say, it is quite a good album. It does sound like early 90's techno, but with that said, I love early 90's techno. Just that, the piano itself in its progressive patterns is a dead give away. I think Moby though felt like he needed to go back to his roots. He must have felt, like he was going to far or something. I come to this conclusion, because look at the packaging of this album vs. the packaging of Hotel, 18 even. It is cheaper, more simple.

It is a good album though, one that if you don't buy now, you will sooner than you think
