Cian O'Ciobhain recently recorded a special edition of the Shock podcast entitled Meán Fomhair Eile lifted from a Thomas Kinsella poem 'Another September' . Cian says ' As a teenager growing up in west Kerry, I always lamented the end of summer when the hustle-bustle of tourist left the peninsula for another year. Of course summer was a time to be spent with girls and more often than not September would mean the end of a holiday romance and a return to reality (i.e. the grey school uniforms of Dingle CBS). That was then, this is now. These days, September seems to be the time of the year that I’m most conscious of being mortal. What this has to do with the tunes I selected for this podcast, I have no idea. Still, listen up – I think that it's got something to do with a feeling'

Cian has been kind enough to do a track by track breakdown of the podcast...

01 Geir Jenssen - Camp 2: World Music On The Radio
A shortwave recording of music from South Central Asia recorded in the foothills of Cho Oyu Himal in Nepal. As good a place as anywhere to start.

02 A Hawk & A Hacksaw - In The River
These guys have been around for years - previously as Neutral Milk Hotel - this one features Zach Condon from Beirut on trumpet, taken from the excellent "The Way The Wind Blows" LP on Leaf.

03 Panda Bear - Comfy In Nautica
Panda Bear plays with the Animal Collective. Both he and his band have released superb LPs this year. If I had choose one over the other, it would be Panda Bear's solo effort 'Person Pitch' . This is the opening track.

04 My Bloody Valentine – Sometimes
‘Loveless’ is my favourite LP of all time (today) and this is the sound of summer evenings fading into autumn gold. Excuse me, I think I feel something in me eye.

05 Vector Lovers - A Field
Such a haunting riff, house music verging on the pastoral – his latest LP sees him rework sounds he came up with on childhood Ataris and Commodore 64’s to gorgeous effect.

06 Italoboyz - Viktor Casanova
Love the reaction of the dancefloor whenever I play this out. The weird Spanish folk lyric married to that druggy Berlin 8am vibe. Someone told me it also contains elements of ‘Casablanca’. I've never seen the film, so can neither confirm or deny.

07 Roland Appel - Dark Soldier
One third of the Truby Trio goes solo with this delicious slice of chamber-house meets freak-folk.

08 Burial - Ghost Hardware
Can’t get enough of this anonymous dubstep producer – here’s a single from earlier in the year. LP number 2, called ‘Untrue’, is on the way real soon. This one will probably be on it.

09 Joy Division - She's Lost Control (Tronik Youth Shred-It Edit)
Joy Division are my all time favourite band and this edit gives the drums a right good work-out for the dancefloor.

10 Trans Am - 2378 Regrets
From their recent ‘Sex Change’ LP, this upbeat ditty sounds really really good when driving. Roof-down, wind-in-your-hair anthem, everybody's your friend today.

11 The Human Beinz - Nobody But Me (Pilooski Edit)
Pilooski hit the charts with his edit of Frankie Valli earlier this year. You may have heard the orginal version of this tune before. It’s in a few movies, including ‘The Departed’, when Di Caprio repeatedly swings a fridge door to mash up some poor guy’s head.

12 Midnight Mike – Mongloid
An instrumental cover of a Devo tune. Meant to be sung along to karaoke-style. Taken from Midnight Mike’s recent ‘Midnight Karaoke’ LP.

13 Mr Hopkinson's Computer - Where Is My Mind?
I’m a sucker for melodramatic vocoder-led covers and this Pixies version is no different. The same EP on a label called Wonkpro contains covers of Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees) and the Stone Roses (Fools Gold)

14 Final Fantasy - The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead
One of contemporary indie pop’s true shining stars, his performance in the Foggy Notions tent at Electric Picnic was on of my favourite gigs this year. His third LP should be out soon (this one’s on his first and my own personal favourite).

15 Kate Bush - Army Dreamers
An oldie from Kate Bush that I hadn’t heard before until my true love astonished me with it late one night après-club.

16 The Cryin Shames - Please Stay
First came across it on a Sonic Boom compilation entitled ‘Spacelines’. I believe that they were a Manchester soul outfit, for whom the legendary Joe Meek produced some songs. Real raw heat-wrenching soul.

17 Porn Sword Tobacco - En Hyllning Till Cyckeln
Take from the Swede’s second LP of melancholic ambient sounds on City Centre Offices.

Cian also has been hosting An Taobh Tuathail on Raidió na Gaeltachta for the last eight years and has recently released a cd to accompany the show. Full info on which you can find here: http://www.psychonavigation.com/antaobhtuathail.html

not sure if this is spam or not, but if it is, it's the best spam we've had in a while
