programs for recording audio from computer?
 

Okay, so I'm trying to record audio from iTunes to make a best of 06 compilation, and I can't remember how to do it. I have Goldwave and Audacity, but whenever I hit play on iTunes or any other program, it doesn't record anything. I know I used to be able to do this before, but now I'm lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

make sure that your sound card is set to record wave or 'what you hear' rather than any other option.

Um, how do I do that? I'm using Windows XP, and I have no idea where to look.

MMmmm.... hopefully there's a jpg attached that may explain.

Hit your volume icon on the taskbar, choose "options", "properties", tick "recording", click "ok", then you get the recording control.

You may have a "what u hear" option. If not try "Wave Mix" or "Wave".

Hope this helps. When using Audacity to record you'll see the shape of the waves straight away so you know whether it's working or not.

Okay, but I only have Recording options for Line In and Microphone, apparently. :confused:

P.S. I haven't recorded anything on this computer since I got it in March, so this is the first time I've really messed with it. And all the help is much appreciated!

Dave, what type of sound card do you have? The "what u hear" option should only be avalible with Sound Blaster sound cards. That is why gambit does not see this option for a recording source.

Gambit, you can do it the old fashioned way, by hooking up the line out of your sound card to the line in of your sound card, and record from the line input. Just make sure to mute the line input so to can't hear it (otherwise it will feedback). If the recordings you make sound bad (distorted), turn down the play control (master volume) output.

As for free software to record into, I don't really know of any.

My sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy. All my recording options right now show me Line In and Microphone. And it looks like I'll have to buy a cord if I want to do the line out to line in thing. In case we can't fix this internally, exactly what cord should I look for? I might do that, but this is already a lot more headache that I bargained for.

Or maybe I don't have Sound Blaster Audigy? I tried installing the latest driver, and it stopped, saying I didn't have a Sound Blaster product on my computer (even though I do). I've also seen SigmaTel Audio on my things before, so I guess that's what I have?

If you can get VNC to work I'd have a wee look for you if you want?
