Thank you for Smoking
I saw this film last night and had a great time. It was hilarious. Aaron Eckhart who can sometimes be hit miss is near perfect in this film as the tobacco lobbyist. He's so evil at times, but you can't not help but like him. The film itself is very well made and has a real slick quality to it that lends itself to Eckhart's character and what he does for a living.
At the moment I believe it's on the limited release schedule here in the states so it's only in NY/LA and a few other select markets. If and when it does eventually make it to a theater in your area, make an effort to see it. link |

it's a really great smart funny movie.Aaron Eckhardt at his best playing to his strengths... but everyone in the movie is what really makes it great. Rob Lowe, William H. Macy, Maria Bello and Dave Koechner... and it even has that creepy kid from Birth... playing a kid that's not creepy!!!! Seriously, of the 35 films I saw at SXSW this year, this was in my top 3 (along with This Film Is Not Yet Rated and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon) |
Re: Thank you for Smoking
I saw the poster for this movie back at Christmas and it really messed with my head because it looked like a real Public Service Announcement poster.

Additional information.
Jason Reitman, the writer/director of Thank You for Smoking was recently a guest on KCRW's program The Treatment hosted by Elvis Mitchell. link It's worth a listen. |
Re: Thank you for Smoking
I have a really hard time wanting to go see something with Eckhart, despite everything you say. I hate him and his stupid face.

Re: Thank you for Smoking
I'm sure it is good, I'm not doubting you, and I probably would enjoy it...however, I'm not really inclined to pay theatre prices...more of a renter. I'm far less inclined to go see movies these days than I used to be. Thinking I'll go see Inside Man tomorrow. I like da Spike Lee.
And if you're on the fence about Jack Black, you should find Heat Vision and Jack. Download it, or if you're having trouble finding it, let me know. Oh, and Heat Vision is probably actually one word. Me am stupid. |
Re: Thank you for Smoking
I didn't think you were doubting me, I wanted to add some additional thoughts. I'm in agreement with you in regards to the high cost of going to see films in the theatre.
If I didn't have a connection at a local theatre allowing me access to new films for free, I'd be choosey in regards to what I see first run and what I see at the cheap theatres here in Portland. I also work at one of the cheap theatres that serves beer and wine in town as a projectionist. That is another venue to see films. Most of the films we end up showing are a mix of art house fare and some big budget stuff. With Jack Black, sometimes I don't mind him, like in King Kong or High Fidelity but then I see the trailer for Nacho Libre and have no interest what so ever. Actually, I'm also kind of surprised that Woody Allen hasn't tapped Jack Black to star in one of his films yet. You'd think something like that would've happen by now with Black's ever growing on and off screen persona. If you like the Spike Lee films, I think you'll like Inside Man. I missed She Hate Me but was told by many that I didn't miss anything but a really, really bad Spike Lee film. |
Re: Thank you for Smoking
Actually, personally, I quite liked She Hate Me, but I can see how people ended up hating it. It took a little contemplation, to say the least.
