MKIII- now fully in session.

i believe it is time to officially name this new era of underworld. they died and have been reincarnated (okay, sorry, too much drama), and now they have begun mark III. i think we all agree that the new music sounds a lot different than 1992-2002. so it's time to name this new era. who else agrees?

but wasn't mk 1 / mk 2 making a distinction between pop-y and electronic-y sounds? it's still very electronic, no?

i thought hundred days off sounded rather different on a whole from the older material though...

The band is still called Underworld, so in my eyes nothing has changed with that - after all if we decided to call each phase of music 'MkI etc...' - then im sure we would be at MkVII now!

I think all we need is the MkI and MkII destinction - they are still the same underworld ;)

I always thought the MK I, II distinctions seperated different iterations of the band. Isn't this a new Iteration, a new attitude and a new methodology for musical distribution sans a label? I agree with the addition of the new label.

MK III is like the phoenix arisen from the ashes. (melodrama!)

crank!

I dunno about a new iteration. Attitude, maybe, but doesn't almost every musical group claim evolution and newfound excitement with each successive album?
I think the fundamental distinction remains between
UW I (funky synth pop, 1988-1990)
and UW mk II (electronic, post meeting Darren Emerson, and including recordings as Lemon Interrupt). Maybe the style changed with Daz's departure and again with the new internet releases, but it's not a fundamental change like the change between "Change the Weather" and "Dubnobaswithmyhead".

Just my opinion, is all!

I remember when I was writing a review page for the band, and I tried to find out just a little bit of info about the old UW/Freur band, the ONLY interesting information I could find on Bryn is that he'd smash the crash cymbals with his head, until he was knocked out!

I'd say that they're either still MK II

or they'd have to be called MK IV

MK III would be the period after Darren left. So like those '00 shows when they started playing really long, beat driven tracks - like think of the Bizzarre Fest and Roskilde -> up until the end of the AHDO tour

...but then again - they did "long beat driven tracks" around '94 too

Re: MKIII- now fully in session.

well, i'm already calling this mark III, as its a change in band members...

UW MK I - was the late 80's rock band with 5 members
UW MK II - was the band as Rick, Karl and Darren Emerson
UW MK III - is the band as we know it now, since Emerson left, its basically the same as Mark II, but without one Darren and now with the addition of another, there is a distinct difference in the sounds since DE left, although they still rock a great big fat one every time like they always did...

whether anyone actually cares is a matter of conjecture...after all the band name has never changed...

it has and always will be Underworld, its only relevant for anal fans like me who like to reference everything, so if you want points of reference then fair enough put a MK !!! whatever afterwards, but if you want to really want to talk about the band R&K created its pure and simply:

UNDERWORLD

end of story :)
