Tomato - REQUEST for media/journals/publicity/info

Hello fellow dirts...

I am in need of a little bit of your help with something extremely important to me.

First a little information: Some of you may know me already either through here, BlackBox on DirtyRadio or wherever else.. but to fill others in... I am a student in Dublin University Trinity College, I am studying the History of Art with the intention of a masters/PhD.

I am in the initial stages of a dissertation that will in effect be the starting block for my Masters and hopefully Phd over the next few years. However in order to get the ball rolling i must first prepare a proposal to my superviser concerning the topic of my research.

This is where I was hoping I would be able to get a little bit of help from you guys to aid me in compiling data.

My intention is to propose a study into the development of the Tomato art group; their artistic roots and influences, their interest in cutting edge methods of artistic expression/exhibition/performance and above all their involvement in the development of musical representation via visual and interactive media (whether that be film, lighting, typography, etc). I wish to explore the realm of improvised performance art into which Tomato have ventured through Underworld's live shows - and the effect that this form of performance art has on the viewer.. essentially investigating the viability of treating underworld's live shows as works of art in itself and exploring the heightened sense of exhileration that the viewer (the audience) and the artist (Underworld/tomato artists) experience as a result of this performance, comparing it to the more traditional "artistic experience" that one would find in a gallery or otherwise.

As you can see the project is in its infancy and more research is needed before i can be sure that these are the topics i wish to explore, and also whether there is a decent dissertation in this at all.

What i was hoping from you guys was a little direction and advice as to where I could find any material on Tomato; whether it be newspaper articles, interviews, exhibition reviews etc etc...

I am of course exploring various other means both on and off the internet however I am aware that there are others here who have an interest in Tomato and I am hoping that they may be able to help?

Also I remember there used to be a website, it was probably the old dirty website or something, where there would be a random interview with underworld on the main page... it would display in a strange way and always seem to have something different everytime i went onto it. Does anybody know if this site still exists and also if the material on it is floating around anywhere?

I would encourage also discussion here on the topics that i am proposing. There are some fans here who i am sure will have completely opposite views to me and i am of course very interested in hearing them.

Please if you can help me let me know!!! I would be eternally grateful!

I might be able to help you out with some stuff....

I know I've got at least an article or two sandwiched in between a few of my UW 12"-es and that same Creative Review article (I think... on the front, it's got Massive Attack's "Collected" album cover)

and the Tomato2, Tomato3, and LaFloret cd-roms (I could scan covers, etc and send you the files... but I want to keep my originals)

plus the majority (if not all) of the video bits that were on the old UW live

If only you could access old posts from this forum... back in 2001-ish, I got advice from someone from Tomato (if I remember correctly) about a live ambient music performance I did when I first went to college...

Thanks so much for your help! A photocopy of the article from creative review would be fantastic, or even a scan that you could send me the images of would suffice. The last thing i want to do is actually physically take all this stuff you guys have gathered over the years away from you for any period of time. Im quite possesive of my own collection as it is!!!;)

I will PM you with my contact details!

Yes the tomato website is invaluable and is a great database of work for me to reference!

I have been compiling colections of visuals used by underworld both for prepared videos and in a live manner.. i have a feeling the Boards of Trade will be invaluable for getting hold of a lot of the UWLive videos from the old site.

And i will see what is helpful in your photos! Thanks for the permission.

Scans of anything would be enormously helpful thanks so much Ill PM with my details.

I am thinking the Boards of Trade will be helpful in getting hold of some stuff. I am even interested in getting my hands on copies of some of the broadcated live shows (which i know are readily available).. because these in themselves often contain brilliant mixes of the visuals and live snippets.. (such as the SF gig last year)

That sounds fantastic and is an eye opener to me that they were helping you via the forums on your own projects.. i wasnt aware that their members were so active in that way! I wonder if there is a cache somewhere of all the posts from that period!

Thanks so much for your help. I am going to make it my mission to get this study off the ground, and all your help will not go unnoticed and without credit!

Thanks

If you look hard you can find his contact details easily enough. Fairly logical email address ;)

Good luck with the Tomato thing. Sounds like a great idea.

(Loving the radio show btw)
