Red Bull Advert?

I'm pretty sure that I just heard a sample of "Ring Road" on a Red Bull advert, well more accurately I heard something that sounded like part of "Ring Road", turned toward the TV and saw a Red Bull advert.

Maybe I need some sleep.

Are you talking about how a sample of Ring Road somehow ended up in Family Guy?

No, Underworld used a programmed preset for Ring Road (the topic for it mysteriously vanished.... HMMMMMM). Ring Road was not used in Family Guy or this. It's a preset that anyone can make.

No conspiracy, love - only "cock-up" ;)

I seem to remember this topic was during the "new forums" week before Yan managed to migrate all the archives over and we lost that week's worth of posts.

which part of Ring Road was taken from the preset?

Gotta say, i'm really surprised to hear that UW used a preset, but then, if they liked the sound, i suppose there's no need to make it harder than need be.

It's the loop at the very beginning. That's the part that was in Family Guy, at least.

For UW, I do find it a tiny bit surprising, but not really disappointing. It's just a small part of a huge track.

I heard they used an E chord instead of creating a new one ... gutted.

Re: Red Bull Advert?

I was pretty disappointed at first, too, although the more I thought about it, the less disappointed I was. It is pretty much like sampling, which is common for Underworld and other big electronic acts. Plus, it seems to be the only instance of this on the album... so far. It is a little silly that they had hundreds of songs to choose from and they went with a preset-based one.

Maybe the number of songs was a bit... or a lot exaggerated? I mean, think about it, they carted over To Heal and Glam Bucket from the Sunshine Soundtrack work. Many tracks are short, too. The songs with strong beats had help - Darren on Crocodile, U2 guy on Boy Boy Boy, and now we know a preset on Ring Road.

Maybe Rick was embarrassed to make a fully-ambient album?

Re: Red Bull Advert?

the new album does have a bit of a portfolio feel to it. a couple stand out tracks surrounded by some bits and pieces to showcase his production versatility.

although for me the first step to getting new equipment is hearing all the presets, and then deleting em' all and making my own. otherwise there's 20 tunes from 20 artists in 2-3 years all using the same sounds, which i've run into alot listening to electronic music.

i heard this guitar player once played an acoustic guitar and some of the cords sounded the same as when this other guy was playing on an acoustic guitar. but then, you know what's fucked up? i also heard this white guy in a drum circle playing on a bongo. then, i totally saw this caribbean dood playing a bongo that didn't even look like the white guys but they sounded the same!

i never listened to bongos again.

Re: Red Bull Advert?

I recently saw the ad again, it was of an Australian theme, whist enduring the advert I realised that what I heard was probably the sample that has been mentioned in this thread rather than the track.

/me picks up guitar and plays an E chord in a slightly deflated windmill fashion.

Re: Red Bull Advert?

what bewildered me were the comparisons to dubno when OWB came out... with indie magazines proclaiming it as 'the best since dubno' or 'their most concerted effort since the early 90s'. this was probably because dubno and OWB both have black and white covers that don't represent anything in particular. to me, there is no comparison. stylistically, they are almost completely different genres-

dubno has themes that repeat all through it- wind, thunder, someone walking around a yard, all outdoor noises, are picked and used throughout the entire album to create a mood- not as samples, but to add to the organic nature of the entire album. two of the songs, 'dirty epic' and 'mmm skyscraper' are, as the former's name states, epic tracks.

they build up, not shallowly in tempo or 'noise level' as many mainstream techno songs do, but in emotion, to where at the very end they are so sopping with real emotion that you forget you're listening to what many people throw in the same genre as Paul Oakenfold, only to develop into the next song- that's one reason dirty epic and cowgirl fit so well together- the sadness and desperation of 'dirty epic' develops into the calloused indifference of 'cowgirl'- (i know a lot of you might just see cowgirl as a funky dance tune, but i think the robotic style voice is more than a neat sounding vocal effect).

another thing that dubno maintains is a same general statement throughout; not a statement necessarily found in the lyrics, but in the overall tone of the music; the songs aren't only masterpieces in themselves, but they fit together to form a cohesive piece of music.

and owb just doesn't live up to it. that's why i think dubnobasswithmyheadman is one of the greatest albums of all time, and owb is just a record of a good band that's evolving.
