If Underworld did separate gigs.......

It would be Utopia if Underworld sort of offered different gigs where for one night they played all their ramped up stuff and a night where it says on the bill that this gig will be all their intricate heart stopping tracks where no one talked over them...examples of what i mean among numerous others Best Mamgu Ever, Faxed Invitation, 8-Ball, Crocodile, Stagger, Banstyle, Sappy's Curry etc you know the ones...the ones where your heart feels like it's going to explode from sheer beauty.

Any takers? ;) Don't mean to cause offence to anyone, this is just a wild dream of mine.

I would LOVE that. It's always a shame that the delicate, downbeat stuff gets talked over at gigs, because people have just come to dance. And yet 50% of their work isn't like that. I was really saddened at RFH when people around me just talked right through Tongue.

I've resigned myself to the fact I'll never hear Skym live, but an announced "downbeat" Underworld gig would be just the place to hear it.

Interestingly, I thought the appreciation for 8 Ball was stronger at the Union Chapel gig than the recent Good Friday Roundhouse gig. Is that because only hardcore fans went to see Karl play solo? Or just coincidence?

There were hints dropped many years ago that Underworld couldn't play a set like that, but maybe Lemon Interrupt could. Sadly, nothing came of it.

I think Eight Ball was incongruous to the rest of the set this time around. I've seen the YouTube of Karl doing it at Union Chapel and it seemed pretty magical and in place there. Honestly I was rather surprised to see it turn up in Berlin, such a chill song deserving of a different atmosphere.

Would I go to an entirely chill show similar to something a drone band like Winged Victory for the Sullen would play, with seated audience? Possibly, but then we would be missing the electric vibe Karl gives off. I'm not sure he could stay still for very long (though did seem to be doing a damn good job of it during the dubno shows).

I love some of their more intricate pieces and in a perfect world would have a fans only show of those, with some great stompers as a closer :)

What about a split set w/intermission in between? Do an ~80 minute festival type set, and instead of an encore, break for 30 mins and then reconvene for the "chill" set. If Karl being inactive is an issue, a live jam painting or other art installation going on could alleviate that, though I'm sure some curated tomato visual magic would work, too.
I'd personally love a chillout set from them, but it would have to be heavily advertised as such or the crowd could very likely be let down.

Splitting the set seems like the most practical option. If they do it as the back half, after the greatest hits, then most of the non-hardcores could just excuse themselves without worrying about missing anything.

At this point i'd be happier to sit in a nice theater and watch Underworld play an all ambient set than to hear King of Snake and Born Slippy again.

As Karl and Rick get older, you probably will see more downtempo gigs

In years past, UW played a lot of radio gigs from Lemonworld, etc with some eclectic setlists...demo tracks, ambient experiments, downtempo versions.

Why not perform a set of the deeper, ambient or experimental tracks live via internet stream? I'd pay to see that. Not the same as "being there", but maybe this sort of format suits the tunes better than a club, theater or festival setting, wherein many of the crowd are waiting for the hits.

I believe Rick said its simple economics: it wouldn't fill seats. After the Roseland gig in 2010, he told ndrwrld and I that if we could get 5000 tix sold, they would play any show we wanted.
