Something Rick said during a chat with Lauren Laverne

In this clip, at 0:36, Rick casually mentions his father in law in a way that suggests a musical connection:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rX-mJibROo

"Just walking down that long hall, looking at the photographs... My father in law is probably up there playing with Dudley Moore Trio or somebody like that..."

Now, I wouldn't normally enquire about a performer's family, but in Rick's case family clearly plays a notable part. We've heard about:
Rick's daughter Esme singing the beautiful soprano parts in Isles of Wonder, Frankenstein and appearing on Barbara, Barbara;
Rick Smith's late father and the influence of church music on his writing (and, I understand, we have heard him on 'To Heal (and Restore Broken Bodies)');
Rick's mother by name in the latest album title;
Rick's nephew Simon Prosser, responsible for the quote "Second toughest in the infants";
and Rick's wife Tracy, credited with setting Karl on course for writing the type of songs that brought them huge success.

But was Tracy's father therefore one of the Dudley Moore Trio, or is that quote - sadly ignored by the interviewer - hinting at a different role, of musical director or producer?

If one of the trio it would be drummer Chris Karan or the late bassist Jeff Clyne, I guess, but I couldn't see any connection in online articles.

Rick came so close to identifying, that I trust it doesn't look invasive to ask!

Interesting. Though he says "playing WITH dudley moore trio or somebody like that", which makes it sound like he was a session or touring musician.

Hi - thanks for this thought!

My logic in discounting that was on the basis that the Dudley Moore Trio technically would be just the 3 players of course - I couldn't see any reference to them being joined by others for any recordings - and also that the two players I mentioned were in various groups, so 'playing with' the trio 'or somebody like that' could still fit.

However I might well be on the wrong track and you have nailed it - if that's the case this may help to jog a memory of any mention of a 'session musician father in law' elsewhere.

Again, I trust it doesn't look nosey/invasive to discuss this, given what I stated!

Cheers :)
