Introduce Yourselves
Well, this thread seems to have disappeared in the Great Server Migration of 2008 so I thought I would start another one.
My name is Janie, I am a dinosaur (according to certain Dutch members of Dirty ;) ) and I have been spending far too much time hanging round here since about Christmas 2003. The first Underworld choon I heard was Cowgirl, which was on a mix-tape my sister made for me. I first saw Underworld in 95 or 96 - can't remember the year but it was at a festival in Brighton, then life seemed to get in the way of enjoying myself for a few years, and I didn't see them again until nearly 10 years later in Amsterdam. I have tried to get to as many gigs as possible since then, before the arthritis sets in. :p My favourite track is Biro the Leggy, renamed as Beautiful Burnout for Oblivion with Bells, closely followed by Pearls Girl. My best Underworld Live Moment was at Cocoon in 2006, when I had climbed up onto the step in front of the stage just at the point when the guys struck up PG - and I was in heaven. My best UW Private Moment was meeting Karl and Pricey in the lobby of a hotel in Tilburg in November 05 and bending his ear for about 10 minutes or so. He is such a patient man, cos I can talk for England :) I love this place. And I love the people that post here. :D |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Hey!
I'm called Holden and have been enjoying these boards and this band since 2002. A bit late discovering UW, as i only got turned onto electronic music in '96 or so, and had only heard Pearls Girl and Born Slippy on compilation cds. But i can clearly remember buying Underworld cds on a snowy New York day on a friend's recommendation, and by nightfall being in awe. By that time, i'd missed the gig at th Hammerstein and it wasn't until last september that i finally saw the boys live in Central Park. If i was forced to pick a favorite track, it's probably Cups. Lotta great folks around these boards with interesting viewpoints and endless knowledge of music, culture, film, etc! Glad to meet you! |

1st track was Dark & Long on a tape of Dubno that a mate did for me, walking to work through empty streets at 5 am in the early summer of '94 ... perfect way to start your day. I started collecting shortly afterwards. I haven't got a favourite track. |
Re: Introduce Yourselves
hello my name is chris and im a recovering flame war addict:D.
Underworl is one of the best music groups. I first became familiar with them while watching trainspotting. From then on I was a full on fan. I've only had the opportunity to see them once but it was one of the best shows ive ever seen. Favorite new group is MGMT. Nice to be back here. I promise I will try to be kind:rolleyes:. |

I'm Jason from NJ.
Graphic Designer/Usabilty Analyst I'm not quite a dinosaur but I'm not a wee one either. I've celebrated at least 10 birthdays since joining dirty back in 1996/7? (even before it was dirty.) I've been lucky enough to meet around 15 of yas. - all great people and great times. My first time hearing Underworld was tasting Born Slippy on the Trainspotting soundtrack followed very closely by Cowgirl on MTV Amp. They were referred to me as, "the future of music." I wasn't sure I bought that description but I did fall in love with their style/talent almost instantly. I tracked down the band and purchased STiTI right away. Every since then I've been on top of their releases past and present. Saw the gang live for the first time in 1997 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC. Ive since seen them 9 more times, most recently in Atlanta; I tried to see them in London in 2007 but due to illness, the show was cancelled. One January, Karl wished me happy birthday in an uwlive pic. Big smile. |
Re: Introduce Yourselves
Hello all~ my name is Monique and I tried to sign up here several times, but all of those times didn't work. Until now, that is. I'm still a high school student about to become a senior next year...holy mackerel. I turn 18 in December, so no voting for me in November! My huge goal in life is to make comic books and be happy. Pretty much.
I've been a huge huge HUGE fan of Underworld since watching the music video for "Two Months Off" in...either 2004 or 2005 and I got incredibly addicted to their music when I downloaded their discography in September 2005 in addition to getting 1992-2002. I listened to nothing but Underworld for months after that. ;) I have yet to see them live. Hopefully that August date in New Jersey will be my first time. :> This year I finally got my hands on Second Toughest In The Infants and Beaucoup Fish, which is super exciting to me. I don't have dubnobasswithmyheadman, but SOMEDAY I WILL GET IT. The Oblivion With Bells t-shirt is my first UW tshirt. So I try to wear it on good days. :) I've listened to a few live broadcasts that weren't interrupted by school. (Too bad the upcoming broadcasts will be interrupted by school except for the June date. That one is what I'm grateful for.) Lemonworld 2005 killed me with happiness. Cocoon did the same thing. Underworld is definitely my favorite band ever due to how different they are as well as how they experiment with their sounds and put it together into some sort of masterpiece. My favorite song of their's is "Best Mamgu Ever", since that song made me so emotional when I heard it the first time. Back when I had gotten pnemonia...before I went to the hospital and missed all those Roundhouse broadcasts. (Coming back from the hospital on the 17th and hearing that there was an illness in the band almost made me cry..!! Especially hearing it was pnemonia as well!) Uh. I write too much, forgive me. I love going on and on about Underworld. And writing things into detail to get the point across, haha. It's super nice to meet you all finally after lurking for more than a year. :D |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Martin from Macedonia. Been exposed to electronic music at a pretty young age under the influence of my old man who has become a geezer estranged by physical labor in the past 6 years(sine coming to the US) and shows no interest in music what so ever. I took notice of UW sometime around 99 but i am confident that I've heard their tracks before(on the legendary Channel 103, Skopje) without knowing it was them. What got me into Underworld is the energy in their tracks. At first i listened to head-bangers with super mighty drive behind the BPM. Later I started to discover that Rick and Karl have a softer side of them and make music other than "SHOUTING LAGA LAGA". I felt the sincerity behind their slower, acoustic-ambient-downtempo work. The third stage of the addiction was when i started paying attention to the lyrics. What i saw behind the words was the poetry of one incredible individual who I think could be a really good fiction writer that can dive into subtle obscurities and still make sense to UW fans.
When those three stages of the UW experience were put together it became obvious to me that there are very few electronic music acts that have their own recognizable personality and character. That notion was confirmed at my first UW Live in NY in 07. I must pay my respect to underworldlive.com for being a nexus for everything Underworld and an outlet for the creative products by Rick and Karl and Darren Price now. I enjoy the radio-really good job with that! I enjoy the pictures, books of jam, snippets of future tracks and so on. I enjoy football and the culture behind it. I like art and photography and I am determined to change some things in the world by influencing one person at a time, as many people as possible during my lifetime. Looking forward to the All Points West show. peace, love and all best from Maahtin www.flickr.com/skopyeah <-- my UW influenced photo album |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
just call me dAvE...
it's a pleasure to be your acquaintance. my first uw exposure was in 95 - Cowgirl on the Hackers movie soundtrack. it was a little obscure to me back then, but i never skipped the track when it came on. my 2nd exposure was in 97 - Pearl's Girl on the Saint movie soundtrack and immediately i was hooked, however, i didn't make any attempts to find any other tracks by them at the time (i think i was too busy with the female gender at the time). my 3rd exposure which was the major link was also in 97 - Born Slippy. NUXX. i heard it on K-ROQ on Jed the Fish's Catch of the Day one fine afternoon and i immediately NEEDED more. unfortunately, no name of the band or track was given. so for several months i tried various searches of alternate means. little did i know it was underworld - a band i had already been familiar with and liked very much. so my search was put on hold. a few months later, my best friend was married and that very evening (it was an early wedding) - me and a few new friends i had made went out to a club. on the way, in an old Audi - 6 of us packed in a 5 seater - that unmistakable tone came on... i was shouting to the driver (since it was her radio and whom i developed a strong infatuation with due to her obsession with music), "what is that song? who sings that song? where did you get it?!!!" - born slippy, trainspotting soundtrack... this would be my favourite and most memorable uw moments. and so began the great obsession. i have been riding the dark train ever since. i've had the pleasure of seeing uw perform live 2 times - once in 99 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and recently in 07 at the Hollywood Bowl. i can't wait for their return to So. Cal. as for favourite private uw moment - it would probably be the day i went to the beach and sat in the sand looking at the ocean with beaucoup fish in my ears... well a cross between that moment or the moment my daughter came into this world - while at the hospital w/my wife, the nurse brought her to us (all bundled up), and i hit play on my iPod and of course, i had to play Born Slippy. those 2 moments actually go hand in hand because it was at that moment at the beach that made me think about parenthood. aside from being an uw fan, i draw and i write. i prefer mac over pc and i own a music library of over 30,000 tracks. my life is a soundtrack. i do owe alot of my inspiration to the artistic duo that is Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. and if you're reading, thank you... |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
hey, i'm someone and i enjoy underworld's arranged tones'n'drones['n'otherstuff].
first underworld song i heard was probably fricken' born slippy.nuxx on a big day out compilation. so yes i am australian! [more personal info follows]. my favourite underworld song is... uh... either mosaic, cowgirl [winjer mix], ansum, dinosaur adventure 3D, thing in a book or 020202. hard to D-Side. i'm not a big fan of the singles and all that. and i dislike vocal emphasis in music, so yeah, i avoid some of their output like the plague! still, been a solid listener for 4 years or so now. otherwise i mostly listen to dark ambient... various forms of "post-rock"... recent, "difficult" prog music... led zeppelin... avant-garde metal... yeah. anything really. also a big fan of mainstream 90's/80's pop and such. basically, "organized" noises (boring, i know). never seen underworld live. or anyone "notable" for that matter. i saw some local metalcore gigs. they were pretty good. haw haw. oh, and i must say i love pizza for eggs! literally!! |

Hellooo folks,
I'm Sotira and I'm based in Manchester, I first heard Underworld's stuff on a Bjork remix of Human Behaviour many moons ago and have been hooked ever since. I think my most favourite track has to be 8 ball, its so atmospheric and gives me goose pimples everytime I hear it. I too have been trying to see Underworld as many times as possible until arthritis sets in ;) The last time I saw Underworld after a long absence of probably missing too many shows that I should have found out about was earlier this year at the Apollo in Manchester. |

My name is Scott. I'm not around here often but I try to stop by every once in a while.
I'm a video game developer by day and, at the moment, a video game developer by night. When I get free time I'm a huge music fanatic so I head off to gigs, listen to music, all that jazz. I have been told by my non-American friends that I am "Very American" even though I don't really consider myself that way - maybe it's coz I'm generally wearing a hat? :) I try to think of things as global, treat people how they would like to be treated and give back where I can. I'm sort of taking a break from myself at the moment, getting ready to go on a long vacation from work and my usual routine. |

My name is Metha, and I'm from Hilversum, The Netherlands. 27 Yrs old, and after years of living the lazy student's life, finally graduated. Oh, and I've got one of the greatest jobs I can imagine: doing a radioshow! So, sharing UW with the rest of the world, occasionally. :D I probably won't post very frequently, as I don't have an internet connection at home. Just so you know. ;) |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Hello. I'm 25 and from the US. I'm a big Underworld fan. I got into the group back in the first couple of months of 2000. I found a remix of Jumbo on some 'techno' compilation disc. I loved the song, and eventually wanted to buy to buy the album with the original Jumbo on it. So I bought the CD for Beaucoup Fish. Amusingly, now in retrospect, I preferred the remix of Jumbo over the original, real Jumbo; but only at first. But I delved into that album. I really liked it and gave it a lot of play time. Over repeated listens, I started to like it a lot. I started learning the ins and outs of the album, and soon I was an Underworld fan. I liked the group, so once I became a fan, I decided to try out their other albums. I didn't know about the 1980s albums then, so I had Dubnobass, STITI, and the Pearl's Girl EP to choose from.
I bought Dunobass first. I like Beaucoup Fish. I like it a lot. But I love Dubnobass. As was the case with Beaucoup Fish, it took some time before I could really appreciate this album. I love this album. Next I checked out the Pearl's Girl EP, which I liked because there are some great tracks on it. Then I got STITI. I didn't think I'd find another Underworld album that'd be as great as Dubnobass. But wouldn't you know it, STITI blew me away, too. And I love that album, as well. Once I came to love both Dubnobass and STITI, I came to view myself as a huge Underworld fan. I love this music group, and they (along with U2) are my favorite music artist/s (they stand 'side by side' in my book. :D). Once I became a big fan of UW, I've been following them ever since. I have their two latest albums, the River Run downloads, and more songs, EPs, and singles from them. I have a good bulk of their electronica material and I want to keep acquiring more of their electronica material. Unfortunately, I have yet to buy their 1980's albums as either UW or Freur. Also, I have not been to a concert of theirs before, but I hope to see them the next time they tour the US. Despite this, I still consider myself a big UW fan, as I love this group, I love their music, and they are one of those artists that have made an impact on my life. Whew! I typed quite a bit. I guess it is just good to share my enthusiasm for the group with fans that can understand where I am coming from. :) |
Re: Introduce Yourselves
Hi, I'm adam.
I'm 46, male and have four kids. I first got into underworld when they released that song about radars (when they made real music). Since then their albums have been more disappointing than the last. I bought their last disc, whatever it was called, and on my first listen I wanted to vomit in terror. I also think that underworld made a huge mistake when they dropped that young guy from the band, derrick or whatever. He carried them. Also, when they played the radar song they played instruments, but now all they do is just play buttons on a machine which is easy anyone could do it. I'm basically doing the same thing writing this post, basically. Also, i saw them at a concert a few years ago and they had a laser. It was weird to see two old men trying to be ravers. (I also wanted to vomit a little bit at the concert and it was shit because they didn't play radars). ANyway got to go now I have a greek salad to eat. |
