Karl Hyde solo album - Edgeland, April 22, 2013

A flurry of activity from Underworld;
Karl…
April 2013 will see the release of Karl Hyde’s debut solo LP, Edgeland. It features nine tracks that were recorded over a year in London with multi-instrumentalist and producer Leo Abrahams (whom Karl met whilst collaborating with Brian Eno on Pure Scenius). Edgeland is a graceful and meditative collection that explores the limitless possibilities of what late film director Anthony Minghella christened ‘esoteric Underworld’ – something that’s existed on record since Dubnobasswithmyheadman.
Edgeland is released in Japan on April 10th and across the rest of the world on April 22nd on deluxe CD/DVD, standard CD, download and 12" vinyl. It is also available for physical pre-order in the underworldlive shop. The first 150 pre-orders from underworldlive (across all physical formats) will each receive a unique, signed and numbered photograph taken by Karl documenting the journeys through the edgelands that inspired the album. Each physical format purchase will also receive a digital version of the album in their inbox on the day of release (we of course aim to have pre-ordered physical stock with you on or very close to that date).
You can hear the first taster from Edgeland - 'Cut Clouds' and for a limited time only download the track for free here

Karl is currently rehearsing a new band in preparation for a series of live shows from the Spring onwards, the first of which is SonarSound in Tokyo on the 7th April 2013. More to be announced soon.

Rick…

As you may have read or heard on the world-wide-grapevine, Rick rolled straight out of his music directorial role on the London 2012 Opening Ceremony and into writing and recording the score for Danny Boyle’s new movie Trance. Staring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson, the film is due for release on March 27th 2013 in the UK.

You can check out the film’s trailer here

Re: A flurry of activity from Underworld

Wonder what this means for Underworld as a duo? Just spending some time on other projects or will this be the focus?

Pre ordered, wonder if I'll get a photp

Who is Leo Abrahams?

The free download of Cut Clouds appears in my iTunes as "Cut Clouds" by Leo Abrahams, album artist Karl Hyde. I've preordered too, 150 isn't a lot though!

Pre ordered too:)

Leo Abrahams is a great guitarist and collaborator of Brian Eno, and its known that he met Karl hyde during Pure Scenius project in 2009. Which was fantastic...

Pre-ordered. Have no clue what number I am or if I even made the cut.

Re: Karl Hyde solo album - Edgeland, April 22, 2013

two copies of the cd/dvd preordered. It'd be funny if one was 150 and one was 151...

edit: One of the images on the homepage is now a link to the edgeland page. Any wild guesses on what any of the last 4 images could end up linking to? Pipe dream: Archive of all THEIR show recordings =D

Re: Karl Hyde solo album - Edgeland, April 22, 2013

Track listing. Sounds typical of Karl's musings:

'The Night Slips Us Smiling Underneath It's Dress'
'Your Perfume Was The Best Thing'
'Angel Café'
'Cut Clouds'
'The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers'
'Slummin' It For The Weekend'
'Shoulda Been A Painter'
'Shadow Boy'
'Sleepless'

Re: Karl Hyde solo album - Edgeland, April 22, 2013

From the Sonar Sound website "2013 see's Karl Hyde, together with a group of hand picked musicians, embark on a series of solo shows to perform some of his new songs as well as rediscovered and reworked gems from the Underworld vaults. For a brief taste of what to expect."

I am surprised by the 'reworked gems' bit at the end. It looked to me like every effort had been made to make this project nothing to do with 'classic' Underworld (i.e. techno version) as we know it. My guess is that the reworked gems will be done in an Edgeland way and not a 'classic' Underworld way....

Should be interesting to see what old material they play in japan. tongue? dirty epic? older stuff even? Also They have 'Underworld' dates scheduled for mexico. What they will do with underworld after karl's side stuff could be interesting as well.

Just had another listen to "Cut Clouds." I wasn't in the mood for it at first but this time it really hit me. Sneaky little devil. Really looking forward to the album now.

The set sounds great, I had no idea that playing the new album
would feel this good & explorations into cherished U/W
classics reveal a whole other point of view that makes
me want to revisit the entire U/W catalogue for live.
This has turned into a richly rewarding journey, will
anyone come to see us? – I hope so, because I’m excited
about sharing these sounds with everyone – please come.
I'm excited to hear bootlegs of a concert, hope they happen. I'm eagerly awaiting this album. Not chomping at the bit, but just low level anticipation and excitement. I just got this feeling it'll be a good experience, and a catalyst on to more great things.

Q review the album in Mays edition & give it 4 stars. There's also a Q&A session with Karl, where he clearly talks fondly of UW stuff, including hints at future work. People were worried IIRC when the solo album was announced. From reading the interview, UW ain't finished.

The Trance OST also get 4 stars btw...

The order numbers appear to be unique across the entire Topspin platform, which does ordering for hundreds of artists, so unfortunately, the order number gives no indication.
