Moaner question

I was wondering, was "Moaner" written specifically for Batman & Robin, the way "Oh" and "8 Ball" were for their respective movies? Does anyone know?

Also, I wonder if the band, flush off their breakout success with Trainspotting, was all excited at the prospect of being included in a "big ticket" project like Batman & Robin? And then when they saw the movie, were they like, "oh crap..."

I'm pretty sure that Moaner began as a Batman-specific track. However, in that moment of horror in seeing George Clooney in all his rubber-nippled glory, fighting Arnold Schwarzenegger to the backing of their song, they decided to make it a Beaucoup Fish track.

LOL!

i get your drift. But if memory serves, "Moaner" plays during the motorcycle street race with Alicia "Clueless" Silverstone. It's also not audible enough to drown out the lousy dialog.

I read somewhere that Moaner came off the remix of U2s Mofo.
Maybe the infamous mix does sound like Moaner

"8 Ball" i kind of figured was specifically for The Beach, esp. given the vibe of the other tracks on that ST.
But i didn't know "Oh" was specifically for "A Life Less Ordinary" - i have the soundtrack, and it's quite eclectic, and to me "Oh" sounds a bit of a throwaway? Were the boys really "inspired" by this so-so movie to write it?

agreed - i'm pretty sure moaner was out long before BF, (and before the kittens download?), so when BF was released moaner was a bit of an old track stuck on the end. i recall lots of us on the forum also being a bit disappointed that it fades out early to fit on the cd... :)

Apologies; I was just trying to make a general statement about the film.

I may be mixing up my thoughts, but I sort of remember that 'Please Help Me' was slated to be the last track on Beacoup Fish? But Daz had been playing 'Moaner' at his DJ gigs and had been getting big responses from the crowds. So it was decided to give Moaner a second life on Beacoup Fish. I could be mistaken though.

This is what happened. He says something about it on this interview.

Re: Moaner question

I was just listening to that interview a few weeks back, and Emerson does indeed say that he persuaded Karl and Rick to put Moaner on Beaucoup Fish as it was doing really well in his DJ sets. Its placing on the Batman & Robin soundtrack kind of doomed Moaner to obscurity, so they were glad to give it a chance at life on BF.

Emerson doesn't say anything about Please Help Me, though. The only explanation I can imagine for leaving that off the album and leaving Push Downstairs on is plain and simple DRUGS.

Which reminds me. Whatever happened to Alicia Silverstone and Chris O'Donnell? They were both big up & comers in the mid-90s.

They appeared in "Batman & Robin," that's what happened.

Thank you for the memories, Karl, and the lovely drawing. :D

I didn't realize this had already been answered a couple times, but the embellishments in this version are nice, such as the original proposal for being in the movie, and your reaction to the final product.

Well...
How's that? We discuss the history of Moaner, and we get an article about it.

Was the Kittens download different than the Beaucoup Fish version? I've always wondered if there's a studio version of the track they play live as it's quite different from the one on the album, and I never actually got that ancient download.

I'm pretty certain the 'Kittens' available for download was the album version.

I remember hearing Moaner for the first time at Twilo in NYC with Daz djing. I'd only heard it from the Batman soundtrack but when he dropped it, the place went absolutely nuts.

edit: wow, i just replied to a 6-year old thread.

Re: Moaner question

Moaner is a great track, and though it of course doesn't really "flow" in the album, it absolutely had to be on there, imo. A bit like how Born Slippy not being on an album is now an oddity (though now meaningless with the Spotify streaming world), Moaner being associated with the album has surely increased its at-home playtime.

The thing is, it sounds great on headphones or a good stereo, but is an absolutely mental finishing track to a gig. Great stuff.
