Nice. |
Re: Orbital reform
i knew it would happen......i'm there!:D:D:D

Re: Orbital reform

|
Re: Orbital reform
mmm...leftfield.
|
Re: Orbital reform
Sweeeeeeeet!
http://www.nme.com/news/orbital/41214 i can't tell from this if they're planning anything beyond the one gig- the bit about "time was right", "not an exercise in nostalgia" makes me hope there's new brotherly collaboration. |
Re: Orbital reform
Superb news!!! :D
|
Re: Orbital reform
oh no, we're even more shit when we're seperate, lets see if we can scccccccrape together some bits of stuff so that together we can be mediocre again
meh. |
Re: Orbital reform
WOW I HOPE THEY PLAY DOCOTOR WHO AND THEN THE BELINDA CARLISLELS SONG BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T ALL HEARD THE EXACT FUCKING SAME THING NINETY TIMES.
Both should throw themselves under lorries. |
Re: Orbital reform
Wow! Not entirely unexpected, though 5 years does seem to have flown by...
I don't hold out any hope of there being any new Orbital material, but to be honest they could play exactly the same set at their farewell tour and I'll still be first in line to get a ticket... |

Re: Orbital reform
The setlist for the 2002 tour was identical to the 2004 tour except for 2 songs. It was almost in the same running order, and sounded almost the same every night too. Variety was never the order of the day with Orbital gigs but if you saw them once per tour you were always satisfied and the show they do put on is always good.
2002: remind, the girl with the sun in her head, funny break (weekend ravers mix) belfast, technologisiki park, the box, satan, halcyon, frenetic, impact, dr ?, chime 2004: remind, the girl with the sun in her head, belfast, you lot, the box, satan, halcyon, one perfect sunrise, impact, dr ?, chime so you can see one perfect sunrise replaced frenetic, and you lot replaced technologiski park. The 2001 tour had a few more tracks from the Altogether and was the last real album tour. The blue album tour was rushed, as you can see with the setlist. |
Re: Orbital reform
I can remember Tension being played as the first track when I saw them...
|
Re: Orbital reform
Agree that they weren't too varied live from show to show (or as Stimpee points out, from tour to tour), but geeez, they were SO MUCH BETTER than 98% of the other electronic dance music out there, and much of their 90's touring career was legendary.
This isn't unexpected, but perhaps sooner than i thought they'd rejoin, esp. with their solo projects going on (i quite liked the first Long Range LP). And though their last few albums seem a tad cobbled together, see point above (e.g. SO MUCH BETTER THAN....) If it's a one-off for their 20th anniversary, that's cool, and you can probably tell right now which songs will get played. But if there's a cjhance of new material (heck, even if thrown on the back of a reissue of Chime, gotta see that coming), i'm all :D |
Re: Orbital reform
To be fair, the 2004 tour was the "farewell" one, so it was evident it was going to be a Greatest Hits with a coupla bits of the Blue Album in it.
I wouldn't mind seeing them again no matter what they play, frankly. |

kinda have to agree with that statement as well... I mean really guys... did Orbtial EVER make an INCREDIBLE album where you can listen to the whole album at once, and not want to skip a track or three? Orbital are kinda like Tricky in that they will have two or three good/great songs - then a lot of filler (except Tricky at least went through a period of solid albums before becoming patchy) |

Orbital 2 (Brown Album) - 1993 Snivilization -1994 In Sides -1996 These are their masterpieces, imho, and from the looks of the old Loopz forum, many others as well (though that's like sampling the UW forum in terms of dedication and obsession!). i agree that the others have more filler vs. killer. Orbital 1 (green album) is mostly a collection of singles and has various tracklists, so it's a bit harder to consider a unified whole (plus sounding quite dated in spots). I'd say that "Middle Of Nowhere" in 1999 was still quite solid (i, for one, can listen to it throughout, no skips). The last two, "The Altogether" (2001) and Blue Album (2004) are acquired tastes, and the case could be made that quality did drop post-In Sides. |
Re: Orbital reform
Snivilisation has the most variety, its a good album to listen through in a single sitting.
|
Re: Orbital reform
I could definitely listen to the Brown album and Snivilisation all the way through any day of the week. I could listen to In Sides all the way through if I'm in the mood.
But considering their last two albums, I'm not too excited about new material, quite honestly. Still, cool news. |
Re: Orbital reform
i've done brown album all the way. almost did middle of nowhere all through too. not so much sniv
i actually returned in sides. it wasnt terrible it just... wasnt anything i wanted. i had petrol and the box already. the only other thingi liked was the lead-off. the second half was no mans land of cheese and boring. the counter dude looked at me like i was crazy. the altogether had a better bonus disc than album. at best that album had guilty indulgences, goofy escapades. nothing on it was actually any good. blue album is beyond terrible aside from a couple tracks. |
Re: Orbital reform

i think "The Altogether" was definitely a guilty indulgence, what with "Dr ?", "Tension", "Tootled" and "Waving Not Drowning" all being silly experiments with dubious samples. But i quite like the closing track, "Meltdown", it's a monster. Seem to recall "Blue Album" being expanded from EP to almost LP length as an afterthought - it kind of shows. But it's worth it for "Tunnel Vision" and "You Lot". |
Re: Orbital reform
'brown' is the only one that i listen to end-to-end, still now...
...but live they're a different kettle of fish, with many tracks evolving so you get something very different from recordings - usually with a hefty wall of sound thrown in - for a couple of years i reckon they were a better live act than uw, as uw went through a stop-start predictable set-list, bereft of improvs and flow... ...but certainly more hit-and-miss for physical media - 'in-sides' being the nadir! |
Re: Orbital reform
meh
they can not offer anything new to me... in fact some other bands should call it a day now too... The Prodigy - we're looking at you... at least UW are still offering up fresh and varied sets, although they could drop some 'classics' now and again from their sets... |

I agree the setlists are varied. I agree its nice to hear some of the old classics... I agree some tracks should be dropped altogether cos they are boring. I disagree that the sets are 'fresh'... im bored of the stop/start nature of the sets, and layering of ambient tracks / dp tracks used as bridges that often just dont fit in to the set vibe at all... I miss the free jamming and the anticipation! However I would say that thanks to the way technology has progressed, and the 'easy to find' nature of most of the gigs, the production quality is top notch. That is what i call a praise sandwich. And yeah, i guess they made it from scratch rather than sampling. I guess i meant, the inclusion of the track, that had been played forever live - in interviews, they were like "well, what the hell? Just for laughs". Not sure how to take the interview snippets for this "reunion" - whether it's just a one-off festival gig (or gigs - even if plural, you'll still get the greatest hits) or if it means new collaborations soon. i think they could make something fresh - Paul and Phil have had some interesting orchestral and collaborative outlets solo and w/ Long Range. Maybe 5 yrs was enough time to restart the crative juices of Orbital. We'll see/hear, i guess |
Re: Orbital reform
So, looks like it's not just a one-off gig. Does this mean a reformation in the studio, as well?

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
the thing that orbital HAD, was that they actually played their gear in front of us. it took a mountain of synths and drum machines and sample products to make that sound, and it was fun to see all that commotion. there is something to be said for a person(s) who loads up all kinds of shit and brings it to the show, and actually RUNS a sequencer. sometimes the sequences line up, other times it's a trainwreck. anyone who attempts to sync 5 synthesizers and a sampler and a couple of drum machines knows the issues of sync. it's a bitch. shit, just try to sync up two laptops with a single MIDI click, it's often times worthless.
Orbital was probably the best electronic show i've ever seen. I was young enough, high enough, and the venue was small enough. If you get the chance, do it...even if they do play that horrible bunch of samples through halcyon. shame... that's one of the most beautiful techno tracks ever, and they had to go and fuck it all up. that said, maybe it's all over.... |

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
Re: Professor - yeah, i hear you about synching and the horrible frustrations of some parts being even just a little off-beat. It's a mess.
Though i've never personally seen Orbital live (i'd very much like to!) i have heard them perform on countless bootlegs. Kudos to them indeed for pulling off fairly complicated and bautifully-sounding compositions live. But to be honest, their live sound isn't that different from the albums. As Stimpee said above, their setlists were pretty fixed throughout the tours and they performed the tracks virtually the same each time. On some of the early stours (93 and 94, anyway), there was a bit more improv. But in the latter days, it was only on Halcyon with its Bon Jovi, Belinda Carlisle, and Darkness samples that you could count on the track maybe sounding different or unique. Underworld are and always have been the kings of live improvisation, and they didn't take tons of gear along to do it. |

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
Very cool stimp. I started with the "Work 1989-2002" and was just barely intrigued enough to get their albums, which ended up being way better than I thought. 3-minute versions of "Halycon" and "Are We Here?" didn't really make much of an impression. Hopefully this turns out way better!!
