A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
As part of my effort to make darktrain.jp more fun/interactive for the user, I have just put a "remixer" I made in Flash up on the "news" page. It`s a simple 8-channel where the user can remix "Dark and Long (Darktrain)".
It took about 2 months of studying and late nights at the computer to get it to where it is now, but it still has some problems with the samples triggering out of sync. I have scoured the web to try and find a solution to this, but after several tests on different computers, it appears to be a machine specific problem (Flash player version, amout of memory, CPU speed, etc...). Regardless, I`m still going to try and tweek it and see if I can fix the problem. If anyone here has any experience with the Flash "sound object" or with looping mutiple sounds in Flash using Action Script, any help would be greatly appreciated! If the loops don`t sync right on your computer, try clicking the "Play" button a couple of times in succession. That almost always fixes the problem! Also, I would like to thank Marshall (a.k.a. The Professor) for providing me with the much needed "synth pad" sample! I would love to hear feedback about it. If it`s too troublesome to use, I will either have to rebuild it or take it down! Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Matt, that is really awesome! I played around with it for a while, pretending I was Rick. It was perfectly in sync for me, but I have a pretty beefy computer.

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Wow! Pretty cool this is! No syncing problems over here :)

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
that is awesome.

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
that is amazing! i am having the skips but i'll try another computer to see how that one works. or firefox vs safari etc...
thanks! |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
That's so cool and a lot of fun! Thanks for working that, Matt!
Like much laptop mixing, i wish i had two mouses or more hands to toggle and synch. |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Well done Matt,
great little app - thanks for sharing :) W. |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
That is quite positively the most awesome thing I have ever played around with on the interweb :D
If only I could get the timing right on the Closed HH & Clap Snr |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Thank you all for the positive feedback! I`m just relieved that most of you guys can enjoy it without all problems I have encountered. Of course, I should mention that most of the PCs that I tested it on were older laptops at the different schools that I work at, and all of them are using IE 5.0!
Also, I wanted to mention that if you Shift-Click on any "pan" knob, it will autopan that channel (I borrowed this little trick from some open source action script I found)! |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Amazing! Works fine, I'm using Opera v9.26 on Vista

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
This is great fun! And what an amazing amount of work you must have put into it. Thanks! :D

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
nice job.
well to save your mix, i recorded it in realtime, but i'm not sure there's a way to save what you actually do when mixing... you could use a macro to save all your mouse actions.. yes, it would be nice to do other songs.. i recreated pearls girl (since i'm not that much of a fan of 'dark train') , by breaking down the samples/loops. you could do that in 8 channels also, it worked out pretty well.. later -1 |

Another idea I though about was to eventually rebuild the mixer where you could reassign samples to each channel via drop down menus. The menus could contain dozens of samples from various Underworld songs. Flash has a limit of 8 audio objects per movie, but with that sort of setup you could theoretically mix a whole Underworld concert on your PC (minus Karl`s voice of course:(). I guess it would be kind of what Rick does live, but on a track-by-track basis instead. I`ve already looked into dynamically loading loops into a Flash movie like this and it might not be such a tremendous leap to change the mixer to do that. |

can you put in on separate page also? later -1 |

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Boy, this is fun! Great idea and very well done!
Fun thing is: whenever I come up with a fat sounding pad sound on one of my synths, I always hammer in the DarkTrain chords. Never got around to "cover" the rest of the track. Oh, and I recently found a way to recreate the BeautifulBurnout synth sound that Rick plays live on the NordLead on my MicrowaveXT. I've you ever need that, drop me a PM ;) === "Be a Rick Smith in your own living room" ==== :D |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Endless fun now.

thanks, this is great fun.

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Great job. I've been spending more time than I should with this today at work.

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Very good!
|
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
This is great:) With my fumbled efforts, it makes me so appreciate what a musical genius Rick truly is.

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
ha, you can't beat my 20minute version with all the individual breakdowns,
buildups etc. actually, if you take the actual loops, and put them in something simple like acid pro, or some other remix program (do a search, and you can find free versions).... you could probably take the vocal loops from karl.. 'like a train' etc.. and make your own decent version.. later -1 |

Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Very nice!
I have one feature request: Can you map the on/off keys to numbers on the keyboard? |

I`ve also found a work around for the sync problem. It`s sort of like putting duct tape on the real problem (Flash is historically terrible with audio), but it might help. I will try it out and see how it goes! Matt |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
This is cool. Time to dig out the old talkingheads and mix up some fresh lyrics for it :)
Thanks Matt! - Matt.. another one |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have made a couple of improvements to the mixer.
First, I added "hotkey" control for some of the buttons - thanks Jan! Mute buttons 1-8 --> number keys `1`-`8` * Master mute --> number key `9` Start button --> <Spacebar> Stop button --> <Enter> (uh oh...Macs have "Return" keys don`t they :O) * Just a note about the mute button "hotkeys": If you hit 2 keys simultaneously, they function as they should (turning 2 mute buttons on/off). Anything more, and one key stroke may not be recognized. What I did is sort of got a finger roll down with a few milliseconds between each hit and it worked fine. I`ve only tested this on 2 machines, so it might work better for some than others. It might also have to do with the "keyboard" reponse settings in your OS. Second, I added a small workaround to help the sync problem some people have had. A couple of loops may still be off by a little, but it appears to have greatly improved the syncing! Please let me know if you have any problems with it. Once I get this version working pretty solid, I`m going to move onto phase 2 of this project ;) Matt |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
matt works great!..
tried it on my computer (xp/using ie 7).. could you change the version on the standalone page also? thanks again.. later -1 |

I just made the changes to the standalone version! Sorry for the delay, but my hosting company was doing some maintenance to the server, so I couldn`t upload for a couple of days! |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
My suggestion for the next one: Cowgirl with Karaoke option.
|
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Matt, you spent this work very much in time.
I heard that you considerably had a hard time.Thank you. Everybody seems to enjoy your toy. Naturally the "Karaoke" is the culture that is popular for people in my contry. There is some of karaoke machine supply maker, and the people can sing the music of the UW. The people can sing music of NUXX,NUXX2003,Two Months Off,Jumbo (but all 4 songs only short radio edit ver). I don't know karaoke circumstances of other countries well, but the person who sang music of UW, please teach what music can you sing? I am interested in the karaoke of other countries. Matt,Will we do a karaoke in "BOUNENKAI" of the end of the year? Chino |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
phaseblue, this is simply amazing!

TheBang, The karaoke idea sounds great! The only problem is that I don`t know how to bring external audio inputs into Flash or how to add effects to them (compression, reverb, etc...). However, I`m sure this could easily be done with another specialized application running at the same time!:) I exported all the sounds as fairly good quality mp3s, so they should sound decent on a loud stereo/PA system! |
Re: A new toy on Darktrain.jp!
Hello Everyone!
I`ve been hard at work on the new "darktrain" mixer (DTM-2)! This version of the mixer will allow the runtime loading of individual tracks (bass, synth, etc...) from various Underworld songs via a tree list box, thereby increasing the fun level by a significant amout :) It is quite an involved Flash application, but I should have a beta up soon (barring any unexpected development problems/bugs)! Does anyone know of a good mp3 encoder that has the option to remove the silence that most programs add to the end of the file? I need to remove the silence so that the mp3 files will loop seamlessly. Of course, software like iTunes is useless in this regard! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Matt |

a free and simple one is Audacity
