mercury annoys me, especially when they gave album of the year to fucking awful klaxons last year.

but hey, "the seldom seen kid" is really brilliant. elbow is great.

i completely disagree. i downloaded the Elbow album when it leaked, heard it twice all the way through and didn't hear anything particularly new or exciting. it's just brit-rock/brit-pop all over again. saddos yearning for the days when Oasis made good albums. weren't Doves enough for this type of horrible guitar driven music?

Burial wuz robbed! this Elbow shit is boring, standard rock. nothing unique or special about it. maybe some songs will show up on the next Guitar Hero. Mercury Music prize has long proven to be full of shit but this year it's finally lost the plot completely.

yeah, burial is quite "new", releasing the same album in two years all over again.

Elbow fully deseve more cred and popularity then other shite indie bands around Kaiser Chiefs and Scouting For Girls. Seen them live multiple times and there albums are consistantly briilant.

To compare Elbow to Oasis is ridiculous - you may as well say any two bands are similar because they both produce music on instruments :rolleyes:

The last Elbow album was fantastic, probably their best yet and a deserving winner. It still puzzles me how this band are so criminally underrated (by the public as the critics all love them) and hopefully winning this prize can finally see them reap some rewards in terms of sales.

The Mercury isn't everyone's cup of tea and there were some glaring omissions this year (no Portishead, WTF?!? :eek: ) but it's light-years ahead of other award ceremonies like the Brits or NME awards. And it's also more about exposure for the bands that are shortlisted - historically all the bands who make the shortlist see a big uplift in sales and it's only been a good thing for Burial. Before the nominations were announced he was relatively unheard of in the UK whereas now he's (almost) a household name and has seen a "huge leap in album sales"

So as the old adage goes, everyone's a winner...

I'm a huge fan of Elbow, but I don't really rate The Seldom Seen Kid. It's not bad, and it's certainly 'boring oasis brit-rock' (have you even heard the record?) but their previous albums are all much better, in my book. Still, as Matt says, hopefully this will give a fantastic, previously underrated, band a bit of a push into the public eye.

Just seen on Amazon that you can pick up Elbow's first two albums for less than three quid each and both well worth getting, especially at that price

Also so earlier that apparently Burial has seen over a 1000% increase in album sales on the back of the Mercury so he's not doing too badly out of it either. And TSSK is back into the top 10 of the album chart too :)

I was happy they won. Been a fan since their inception. TSSK is good, but not overwhelming*. But as others have metioned, they are underrated, so maybe they'll get more credit. But then again, I'm able to see them at 650 people capacity venues (SF Bimbos earlier this year, and the last couple of tours, I think)!!

* I don't even know what's come out this year... In Rainbows was good, but subtle, but without much thought, I think REM's Accelerate's been my fav. Mogwai's out next week tho'. What is the Mercury prize's date range?

personally i love elbow, never understood how they didn't have a bigger following/sell more records as all 4 albums are consistently excellent indie rock-pop. quality live band too on the two occasions i caught them play. TSSK is a strange album, because unlike their predecessors its actually got one or two average songs; but that's more than outweighed by the outstanding quality of songwriting on the vast majority of the album and a genuine athemn in one day like this
