Live Instruments
I was thinking while listening to BOY BOY BOY from the OBLIVION BALL, how it would sound as performed by a live band (guitars, bass, drums etc) as it pretty much sounds like that already if you didn't know any better. You think Underworld would ever consider playing a song or two with a live instruments? Would it even be a good idea? (I know they play live, and Karl rocks the guitar, but you know what I mean)

Re: Live Instruments
Sounds like a gr8 idea - Karl has been a guitarist since he was a lad apparently and Rick plays piano and keys, so I'm sure they've already played it acoustically-ish - maybe they could invite Larry Mullen jnr to play live drums (as he played on the track)

give me a drum machine or give me death!

Re: Live Instruments
Funny you should bring this up.
When I first listened to OWB, I was struck by how "Boy, Boy, Boy" and "Best Mamgu Ever" sounded almost like straight ahead rock songs and that they could easily be played with a full band |
Re: Live Instruments
"full live band" is totally unnecessary
UW are already a full live band... which is a frustrating misconception of a lot of people - or at least when I try and explain UW to people who aren't familiar with their work (not that I'm saying you aren't familiar...) |

Re: Live Instruments
Underworld are musicians after all...
this is what we'd expect from an unplugged Underworld or acoustic set we'll still wait for the mellow set (one day, one day my friends) Pricey can play (or learn) percussion.... |

"i'm in the toilet boy, i'm having a laugh. Everything is wonderful, HEY!" And also, an unplugged Push Upstairs was performed during that interview: "push, push, everybody loves to push!" :D |
Re: Live Instruments
I would love it if they threw in some Freur songs too!! COME ON GUYS!!
|
Re: Live Instruments
i'd really like to see karl make more extensive use of his guitar. the live renditions of "twist" from ahdo tours were inspired... more in this vein!!
on another note, a tribute to underworld in the form of covers by bands of the "rock" genre would be brilliant, i think... how i prayed that "tongue" (unrelated jeff buckley song) was an underworld cover!!! |

Re: Live Instruments
nah i think having karl on guitar, plus someone on keyboards, drums and bass would work really well. leftfield live was much more of a live experience than just triggering synth loops from a sampler...

Both missing the initial concept of the topic entirely. Of course they're a "live band". However, think more "acoustically". |
Re: Live Instruments
i can't think of a single reason to have a live drummer or bassist at an Underworld show.

saying they should play acoustically as though it's a given that it would be "awesome" devalues what they do in their live shows. their shows are great not in spite of the fact that they don't play acoustically, but because they don't play acoustically. i wouldn't pay for an underworld show where they played an acoustic version of boy boy boy. |
Re: Live Instruments
admit it, you've been dying to drop John Mayer on this forum, haven't you?
|
Re: Live Instruments
he's the underworld antithesis. if they were to meet, it would be like matter and antimatter colliding, possibly annihilating us all.

Re: Live Instruments
karl's guitar is fun enough
i dont need no pseudo-rockist bass player gumming up a proper underworld show just for kicks. drums might be fine, but it really is flirting too much with musicians in their own right fiddling with "real" instruments just because it's whats supposed to be legitimate, and then not being good enough to pull it off because it's a different animal altogether |
