Leftfield : A Final Hit

From NME.com:

"
LEFTFIELD are to release a best of compilation to coincide with the tenth anniversary of their debut album.

’A Final Hit’ is out on October 3, and comes ten years after the release of their debut album ’Leftism’.

’A Final Hit’ will feature their early hard-to-find 12” releases ’Not Forgotten’ and ’More Than I Know’ alongside their hits, including Open Up’ which features John Lydon.

A limited edition version of the album comes with a bonus DVD and includes videos for ’Open Up’, ’Original’, ’Afro Left’, ’Release The Pressure’, ’Afrika Shox’, ’Dusted’ and ’Swords’.

Bandmember Neil Barnes said: “I had never sat down and listened to the music that spanned our career in this way before. The essence of Leftfield was to simply make exciting music, push back some boundaries, and to take creative steps forward. We had some great fun on the way.”

The tracklisting runs:

 • ‘Release The Pressure’
 • ‘Afro-Left’
 • ‘Song Of Life’
 • ‘Original’
 • ‘Storm 3000’
 • ‘Open Up’
 • ‘Dusted’
 • ‘Phat Planet’
 • ‘Afrika Shox’
 • ‘Not Forgotten’
 • ‘A Final Hit’
 • ‘Swords’
 • ‘Shallow Grave’
 • ‘Snakeblood’
 • ‘More Than I Know’
Leftfield formed in 1990 and their 1995 debut album 'Leftism' is widely regarded as a landmark album in dance music. The follow-up, 'Rhythm And Stealth', was released in 2000.

The group also became renowned as remixers, working with the likes of Roots Manuva and David Bowie.

Personally, it seems a bit of a cash-in to make a 'best-of' when they've only made two albums, even if there are some early tracks on there. Would have been better if they'd made a couple of new tracks or something...

Re: Leftfield : A Final Hit

It seems like if they had stayed away from album tracks and just put all their rare material one one disc, it would have been a lot more useful. Probably not as lucrative, though.

I agree. I like them a lot, but it seems odd to be releasing a 'best of' album now... I also thought Leftfield was over?

it's hard to beat that extended version of Swords though.... wow.
not that that would be on this 'best of'... but it's my leftfield comment so i'm making it.

f-ing ditto man... I mean, come on! But i'll just buy it for the dvd - just hoping that it'll be region-less, or else I'm screwed!

And it's funny how NOW they're releasing a best of... seeing as they broke up like four years ago. I bet that the upcoming Prodigy best of is a factor w/ this release. And the fact that they're the last of the big electronic bands to release a best of (the Orb -> Orbital -> Chemical Brothers -> Underworld -> Prodigy -> Leftfield ...you could also throw in Primal Scream's one in there too, and MA's dvd)

it's just too bad the release isn't going to have any live stuff

And don't forget Fluke: "Progressive History x":)

It's not just electronic music...seems like every band that survives ten years and was reasonably popular gets to put out a "greatest hits" package. Some that come to mind: Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots. Of course, all these bands were/are influential in their own way, but somehow 10 years seems a lil on the short side for hits packages. Just my opinion...

Re: Leftfield : A Final Hit

not forgotten isn't hard to find on 12"! it got repressed by simplyvinyl!

i generally dislike best of compilations, especially being a jethro tull fan, and having to sift through around FOUR "greatest hits", "very best of", blah blah before finding an actual album.

i still can't believe that silverchair has a greatest hits compilation. (maybe it fit on a CD3", hardy har har)

Stranger ones include Blur, Supergrass and The Lightning Seeds, Travis and The Bluetones.

I didn't buy any of their albums, because I heard it dubbed, "Uninspirederworld".

Re: Leftfield : A Final Hit

i think people will buy this for

‘Not Forgotten’
‘A Final Hit’
‘Shallow Grave’
‘Snakeblood’
‘More Than I Know’

which are all non-album and all great tracks. me? ive got all the tracks already on cd so i wont bother but lets hope they decide to do a 2cd limited thing with something juicy...

Leftfield : A Final Hit

Purchased this today and what a disappointment it is. Release the Pressure has none of the ambience of the Leftism version and Open Up - amongst other unnecessary flaws is cut in half. I can't really recommend this. Sad but true :/

they're called radio edits.

cos otherwise it would be 15 tracks at 8 mins each. which is longer than a cd.

but yea, bummer, cos you can't get those tracks on leftism anyway......

I know that. But it would have been helpful if at said that on the back cover. Full leangth versions are allways better then the radio edits.

Sorry... Were Open Up and RTP not realesed as singles with the radio edits included? idiot.

stimpee 10-03-2005 11:13 AM

Re: Leftfield : A Final Hit

If its a "greatest hits" package you should expect radio edits or single versions. Maybe it is bad that they didnt mention this on the cd.

BTW, for UK/EU residents, PowerplayDirect is selling the CD/DVD edition for £9.99 delivered.

Re: Leftfield : A Final Hit

...how can you not expect edits of the tracks?

I haven't bought it yet - but will be ordering it online (i think)

I am just debating if I really want these edits, I am leaning 60/40 on yes

I have Leftism, but never bothered with their second long player...Is the GH worth it, or should I look into grabbing Rythym and Stealth from the bargain bin?

Not that big a fan of R & S ('cept "Chant of a Poor Man" & "Swords") and I can't believe "Space Shanty" or "Inspection (Check One)" didn't make the cut (I guess these were not singles?) for tracks from Leftism. I have "Snakeblood" off the "The Beach" soundtrack. Are the other rare tracks all that?

there are several rare tracks:

praise (from "104.9, an xfm compilation") [5:13]
a final hit (long version, from "trainspotting 2" ost) [4:54]
space shanty (tribal mix, from "foundations") [7:36]
playing with fire (a neil barnes solo track, from "long time dead" ost) [6:18]
double flash (brown & nasty mix, from "stealth remixes", 2x12" promo) [6:11]
original (drift, from "original" 12") [4:09]
phat planet (version 2, japanese bonus track on "rhythm & stealth") [4:03]
half past dub (from 3x12" "leftism") [3:34]
open up (andrew weatherall mix, from "sonic mook experiment") [5:21]

i have em all. as well as every other leftfield track/remix that's been released.
