[underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
ok, yeah, we know all about underworlds illustrious past,
or do we? here for those of you, that might not have known, is yet another list.....let's start from the beginning and see what we have....and add as we go along on this retrospective.... sure, there's some discontent about the quality of their mixes now.....wonder why? anyways...here we go.. ======================================== 1st relase.. mother earth / the hump, 1992 ----------------------------------------------------- 12" : 1992 UK (Tomato Record; PLUM 2001) [x500; private pressing by the band] 01. mother earth 7:09 02. mother earth (fm mix)5:43 03. the hump (wild beasts)6:13 04. the hump (groove without a doubt)8:49 mixers: underworld ------------------------------------------- track 1 - album version, nothing new here track 2 - new mix, by underworld, interesting, but is it really that different? average track 3- non album track, pretty interesting, housey, and good beats track 4- remix of track 3, another longer version, once again a housey track, and uses pianos, congas, and nice bass tones, check out the wah-wah guitar =============================================== so what do give it, a B+ for effort, and C for overall execution (i never really cared for 'mother earth').. so much for their first effort.....but it was a start for much more, [Oh, and for those that haven't heard these yet, should we post them somewhere?(low quality or streaming format?????)] thoughts? ================================================= next up : mmm skyscraper I love you, 1993 ================================================= later -1 |
Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
Hey, I like the FM Mix. I like that sultry sax opening.
|
Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
I like the intro to the FM mix, it has a bit of a Blade Runner vibe to it... but then, it kinda just goes into a very similar (if not the same) version of M.E. as on the album
the Hump, however... I've never been a fan of whatsoever. |
Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
I happen to really enjoy this album, but it doesn't offer much so I could see how some may not like it. I feel bad for downloading it (stealing), but I would certainly own a copy if it was more attainable; I've been scouring ebay for one in recent months. (and I don't ever listen to records!)
To start, I really like Mother Earth. The FM mix is quite similar to the original, but I still like it. The Hump (Wild Beasts) I really enjoy as well. To me, it feels like mix of the old Underworld (mk 1) and the new. The final track, The Hump (Groove without a doubt) is another good one if you like the Wild Beasts mix. My only complaint is that it only consists of instrumentals, and the vocals are a big part of why I enjoyed the Wild Beasts mix. I wish a Groove without a doubt mix with vocals could have also been included. |

thanx for the comments from all of you..
next up ---------------------------------------------- mmm skyscraper I love you, 1993 ===================================== 12" : 1993 UK (Boy's Own / London; BOIX 13 / 85051-1) CD : 1993 UK (Boy's Own / London; BOICD 13 / 857051-2) 01. mmm skyscraper I love you 13:14 02. mmm skyscraper I love you(telegraph 6.11.92) 7:06 03. mmm skyscraper I love you (jam scraper) 9:12 ---------------------------------------------------------- i just got my vinyl copy of this a week ago...(i had the promo, and the cd single a long time ago)....so i have listened to it recently.. first up: remixers : underworld ====================================== track 1 - album version, now considered an all time classic, from the eerie samples, to the evocative synths, a definitive underworld track in sound, pacing, and overall mood.. track 2 - a shorter edit, thats actually more related to 'jamscraper'. with some speech from an asian lady to start off, it then descends into a more acidy, beat heavy version...with distorted synths, and echoey vocals...pretty repetitive, until the end, until a piano solo works its way into it.. track 3 - a more radical reworking of the some with some cool elements..totally different intro/keyboards, and a rollicking beat add up to a very good rework...with a few sparse vocal samples effort : B+ execution : B ------------------------------------------------- the album version was such a strong release, the remixes didn't really improve on it, and in fact aren't really that great (they're good), but the production values are excellent, and they start to show the trend of underworld reworking tracks to go into very different directions for a second effort it isn't bad, but theres a lot more to come... thoughts? next up: ============================== rez, 1993- b/w cowgirl rez, 1993 -b/w why why why later -1 |

series 2
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Underworld: Rez [1993] single 12": 1993 UK (Junior Boy's Own; COLLECT 002) 1 9:55 Rez 2 8:20 Why? Why? Why? Add this: ----------------------- + 3 12:14 Why? Why? Why? (Extended) i'm going to skip cowgirl, because that will come later. although there's pretty generic artwork. the one of rez/why why why comes in a nice pinkish colored vinyl. (lots of bootlegs out there though). ========================= track 1 - rez is a classic, no doubt about that. it's still heard today, and still be remixed, and is instantly recognizable, and a hallmark at nearly every concert they ever played. they also mix into cowgirl. track 2 - why why why is a mystery, seriously. excellent electro-tech, dark, moody, literally. where did it come from? the title asks the question 3 times. one of their best tracks, especially in it's 12 minute form. there are 5 and 8 minute versions on other compilations. a beautiful song. shame though, i don't think they ever played it live. overall: =============== effort : A execution: A not much about the cover art here. rez, would be associate with the cowgirl single, and that era. but why why why still remains hidden. although the 3cd deluxe anthology brought it back out. it was previously on some japanese re-releases of dubnobasswithmyheadman as the the only digital source for it. later -1 |

Underworld: Spikee / Dogman Go Woof
[1993] single CD5: 1993 UK (Junior Boy's Own; JBO 17 CD) 1 12:34 Spikee 2 12:13 Dogman Go Woof we move onto 2 more non album tracks. were these experiments? anyways, they came with the generic JBO logo of a guy eating a record for the cover. and it was also a cd-single. some of these tracks appeared on various JBO compilations, and also on various other compilations. spikee was played live a few times...and possibly dogman go woof. ----- spikee is interesting in its uses of repeated vocals, whereas dogman go woof is another epic instrumental track that takes a lot of time to build up, and work into a interesting pace and beat. i prefer spikee, but both tracks are good, and also very long and epic. back when most of their tracks where like this. you can see with lemon interupt that they had no problem with the longer format, that was more freeform and allowed the tracks to build. ---------- overall: ============ effort : A execution : B+ i wish they had done more with tomato artwork for a lot of these early tracks, but that's about the only issue with it. the music is stellar. recommended. later -1 |

Spikee is always on my list of favorites, for the sole reason that it took so long for me to obtain. I'd heard it in fan mixes for awhile, finally got the WaxTrax MasterMix version (1999) in 2002 or so, then the UW 1992-2002 compilation. It's always fun to track down specific songs. I guess i have all the UW rarities at this point, save a few remixes... Bring on the next album with a slew of rare B sides and Italian remixes!!! |
Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
we now move onto the next 'set' of remixes, from the same
first album, but in 1994 set 2 - 1994 ================================================== ==================== series 4 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Underworld: Dark & Long [Jun 1994] single CD5: 1994 UK (Junior Boy's Own; JBO 19 CDS) [slim jewelbox] 1 4:08 Dark & Long (hall's mix) [uk cd label: "...edit"] 2 9:51 Dark Train (edit) 3 5:52 Most 'ospitable 4 20:02 215 Miles ---------------------------------------------------------------------- this release had a split 2x12" release with 2 of mixes of dark and long, on them. the cd release was also split with this version being the main release, and a much longer EP later. this version highlights an edit, a longer instrumental, and some ambient tracks. ================================================== == 1) dark and long (halls edit) - a very cool but brief edit, which probably was never played on the radio the original was a sweeping, dark and moody track. this maintains most of that feel, with the laid back take on the lyrics, but abbreviates the long instrumental segues 2) dark train - another classic hallmark song from underworld, the buildup of samples, beats, and sounds meshes into a hypnotizing sound collage. although, it has been played to death, it still earns its place in almost every live concert they have. not a favorite of mine, but i don't hate it either. some of the live takes on it are actually pretty cool 3) most ospitable - a rather short and strange collection of ambient sounds, voices, and dream like variations. was used on the video collection also. has some nice soothing synth chords throughout it. might it have another song on the album? 4) 215 miles - another standout epic track, at nearly 20 minutes. this upbeat, rolling soundtrack, to what appears to be another journey into sound. cryptic samples, oblique sounds, and uptempo percussion guide you through each phase of this sound. effort : A execution A ================================================== ==== a must have release from underworld. although limited by the amount of time on this single, this dark and long EP is a great buy. great artwork, with the minimalistic black and white. 4 standout tracks, pave the way for a blueprint of many of the following releases that would come out from them. later -1 |

Spikee's been a live staple since 2005:

Disc 5
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Underworld: Dark & Long [Jun 1994] single CD5: 1994 DK (April Records; APR 002CD) [full jewelbox; nice silvery ps] 1 4:07 Dark & Long (7") [hall's mix] ------------------------------------- an excellent but short edit of the song. exactly the same as on the UK release. 2 20:12 Thing In Book ["Thing In A Book"] ----------------------------------------- another brand new track. how this relates to dark and long, i'm not sure. but it is definitely an epic track.it was included as the B side to the Chapter 2 12" this is where underworld shines, when coming out with tracks that morph, and mutate, and change during the different parts. who else can create this kind of sonic landscape? an interesting nice long bouncy, mildly ambient track, that floats up and around a cool bassline, and keyboard chords that bubble up and around. very relaxing. 3 17:53 Spoon Deep ------------------ it was included as the A side to the Chapter 2 12" a much harder trancey sounding techno song. lots of beats that coalesce into a shimmering tower of electro keyboards that all merge together while the percussion keeps the pace going. several breaks, and introductions of new sounds keep it fresh for the duration of the track. lots of drum solos, and keyboard solos too that layer on the sound. 4 11:30 Dark Hard ----------------- yet another variant in the 'dark' series of tracks. this track is CD only as far as it seems. another rollocking electro trance track. midtempo but picks up the pace as the song goes on. not as much variation throughout the song, but still has many interesting percussive parts to listen to. there are glimmers of vocals peering out of the song. and yet you do hear some of the samples from the original dark and long around the 8 minute mark. 5 10:28 Dark Train ----------------- again, the same version as previously released on the prior UK single. 6 8:47 Burts -------------- one final track, that was included as the b-side to the original Chapter 1 12". a very distinct sounding instrumental. does not relate to any of the 'dark' songs before it. more of an upbeat experiment with the keyboard chords, and percussive elements going back and forth. really picks up the tempo halfway through it. and you can hear the samples of 'damage' and other sounds in it also. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- effort : A execution : A another must have release from underworld the artwork is similar to prior ones, but more of a gray and black tone. almost like its own mini album in itself. lots of great tracks, and experiments that set the tone for one of the greatest EPs they have ever released. expensive and hard to find, but worth it. later -1 |
Re: [underworld_remixes] -> _retrospective_commentary_
the next single up is cowgirl.
another massive song that they play at all their concerts. the uk/europe got this version =============================== 1 8:55 Cowgirl (long album version) 2 11:45 Cowgirl (irish pub in kyoto mix) 3 6:25 Cowgirl (winjer mix) while the US got this cool ep ===================== 1 Dirty Epic (Dirty Guitar Mix) 10:00 2 Dirty Epic (Dirty Mix) 11:14 3 Dirty Epic (Album Version) 9:52 4 Cowgirl (Irish Pub In Kyoto Mix) 11:45 5 Cowgirl (Winjer Mix) 6:25 6 Cowgirl (Album Version) 8:57 7 Rez 9:55 8 River Of Bass 6:26 i will only discuss the cowgirl tracks: ========================== 1 8:55 Cowgirl (long album version) what else can be said about this track? you've heard it a thousand times and it's still good. from the 'everything, everything' line, to the other lyrics, the drums, the beats, make it an essential techno trance classic, that stands tall to this day. 2 11:45 Cowgirl (irish pub in kyoto mix) another interesting upbeat take on the song. though they never played it live. it's a very cool and interesting version with new beats, and strains of the original in it. you can tell where it came from, and the extended time gives it a lot of room to develop. very well done. 3 6:25 Cowgirl (winjer mix) quite a different take on the song, downbeat and ambient. with strange voices and sounds throughout. like the 'dark' series of mixes for dark and long. this takes the song in a completely different direction from the original. all in all, still very well done. overall: effort : A execution : A another great single with black and white minimalist artwork, that fits in with the theme of the album. the hits just keep coming and don't stop. another essential release. later -1 |

Underworld: Dirty Epic
[Dec 1994] single CD5: 1994 GER (Junior Boy's Own/Intercord; 893.019 / DMD INT 001) [Oct 94] 1 9:46 Dirty Epic 2 10:00 Dirty Guitar 3 11:14 Dirty Add this: ---------- + 4 4:10 Dirty Epic (jed the fish edit) + 5 7:37 dirty epic (dirty guitar fade) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the next single up is dirty epic. what an appropriate title for the song. epic. 1) dirty epic. that says it all. from the moody samples, to the haunting voice. this is one of underworld best songs. a long song that takes you on a very interesting trip. meeting strange people. doing strange things. majestic keyboards. stabbing guitar riffs. rhythmic beat. muted and distorted voices all blend into a dream like state. and karls hushed vocals are perfect. the remixes are interesting, but the original is the best. early in their career they would play it, but then they stopped for awhile. now they seem to play it more often. the lyrics are amazing, and their are many lines that are still quoted today. 'the light it burns my eyes' 'big screen satellite' 'i get my kicks on channel 6' 2)dirty guitar is another song that is well known. in fact it's probably one of the most played songs besides 'born slippy.nuxx'. a very cool instrumental with hypnotic keyboard chords, and nice long intro that goes into a driving beat. muted and distorted voices are also present. when they play it live, they tend to speed it up. a great, and classic song. 3) this song is almost never played, and its a very cool version. not really related to the original though. you hear elements of the song in it. but it's mostly just a lighter instrumental take on it. probably related more to dirty guitar than anything. hints of vocoders, and a deep bass line. they keyboards kick in the middle and also the guitar stabs at the end. parts sound like they might have come from mmm skyscraper. but thats just the sound of the album. another great remix. 4) the radio edit is a very cut down version of the song made for US radio, by jed the fish, a dj in LA. good, but too short to get into. overall: effort : A execution : A another great single with black and white minimalist artwork, that fits in with the theme of the album. this ends the dubnobasswithmyheadman era, and 1994 which is one of the most creative of their career. they will return with a few non-album tracks, and some of the biggest hits of their career next. later -1 |

the 1990's
================================================== == another new decade of music, for another decade. new wave was dying out, grunge was coming in, rock was on the way out. and although some 80's bands would still try to survive with some changes, there would definitely be room for new sounds, new categories, and entirely new genres. i would be letting go of a lot of the old groups i liked, and investigating a lot of new ones. underworld [from wikipedia] ============================= https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underworld_(band) Underworld Mk2 -------------------------------------------------------- After a break—to concentrate on, among other things, art/design project Tomato—Hyde and Smith recruited DJ Darren Emerson and after several minor releases and remixes as Lemon Interupt and Steppin' Razor readopted the Underworld moniker. They produced danceable techno as a trio ("Underworld Mk2"). The addition of Emerson completed Underworld's techno/rock fusion and seemed to eliminate the pop elements in the original duo's work. Their first album, dubnobasswithmyheadman, was considered more accessible than the group's earlier material and crossed a large spectrum of dance music. The signature Hyde lyrics were in place: poetic, hypnotic and whispered; mixing conventional song writing with the use of found material from overheard conversations, answering machine recordings and the like. Hyde had been the lead singer in Underworld Mk1 but the original Hyde/Smith dance material was lyric-free as was most of the electronic music emerging from the aftermath of acid house. 1990s ----- mk2 albums released -------------------- dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994) Second Toughest in the Infants (1996) Beaucoup Fish (1999) everything everything (2000) soundtrack ------------- oh 1997 a life less ordinary 8 ball 2000 the beach status: ------- dubnobasswithmyhead man 14 - https://www.treblezine.com/34054-top...-of-the-90s/4/ 2nd toughest 23 - https://www.treblezine.com/34054-top...-of-the-90s/3/ singles ------------------------ Year Single Peak chart positions Album UK AUS GER JPN NL US US Dance ================================================== ============================================= 1992 "Mother Earth / The Hump" — — — — — — — dubnobasswithmyheadman dirty - minniapolis [as lemon interupt] dirty (remix) [as lemon interupt] eclipse - big mouth [as lemon interupt] 1993 "Mmm...
