The melody is both beautiful and haunting, and really evolves to something menacing. The way the beat finally comes in, with only a kickdrum going. The way the beat comes off with the sharp hi-hats.

I don't necessarily agree that it's the best techno track of all time, but I think it is pretty awesome, and can remember being blown away by it the first time I heard it (actually on a mix one of Winston's mates gave me at Fabric one time, funnily enough - I had no idea what it was called and it took me ages to find out). So STFU the lot of you :p :D

To be honest, I think 90 % of minimal sucks. It's only good on the dancefloor. But this track is just amazing. Maybe you should listen better.

or energy flash by joey beltram. i played that at a house party and mixed acid tracks by phuture over the top and it sounded amazing. we had an mc and everything....

techno has two meanings -- it's funny -- for europeans they mean stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff -- for americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in europe is called "dance". And "dance" in europe is a lot more mainstream and pop-oriented.

Edit: And for anyone with half a brain, techno means techno, not commercial euro-dance.

for "american" style techno (i.e. european "dance"), the best example I've found is this (itunes link):

the best techno song of all time is from Detroit. so many good ones to choose from but today i'll go down swinging in support of Icons - Derrick May. in particular the Montage mix. Machine Funk Music at it's best.
