Talk Talk

Decided to start a thread about this amazing band. I'm listening to Laughing Stock and it's amazing. Their stuff is hard to find on the internet though.

Anyway, discuss.

what you need Leon? Pappa Biz will hook you up.

The Mark Hollis solo LP is great too but you'll have to report back on the entire Talk Talk discography before I can share it with you.

Btw, loads of great Talk Talk stuff on YouTube.

Cool, thanks. My favourite at the moment is "After The Flood". There's something about the nice flowing drums in combination with the ongoing bassline... Just gorgeous. I love the singer's voice as well. Unique and very emotional.

Re: Talk Talk

Spirit of Eden is a great chill-out album, if I recall correctly, although it's been a couple of years since I last listened to it. I must give it another spin.

In that vain, I absolutely adore "It's Getting Late In The Evening", which is just an incredibly mournful, wistful gentle song.

Oh, and the original "It's My Life" is a million times better than No Doubt's recent(ish) cover, and has a quality 80s video to accompany it.

"Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" are masterpieces. when you look at modern music you can not ignore their legacy. "spirit of eden" was in 1988, music was few decades ahead of their time. there was one ep on the internet includes left-offs from that era. (amazing "eden" b side, "john cope", another version of "after the flood" etc) i still have the original releases though.

"the colour of spring" still sounds great.

The Colour Of Spring has a bit of a popmusic touch to it, I love it. Great song writing, very uplifting. Life's What You Make It is still awesome, it's how I got to know them.

I heard their first album is kinda dated and not really worth it? I still have to get It's My Life though.

And I'm also about to get the Mark Hollis solo album. Curious! :)

Re: Talk Talk

'Mark Holis' is an absolutely torturing album, both in its accomplished and wonderful brilliance; yet known by few, and in that it's now ten years old (not dated) and will never be followed up given his leave from music.

well, "the partys over" kind of dated but "its my life" still rocks. shame that mark hollis left music. i think he was suffering from mental illnesss or music business made him insane. for fans, i recommend emi's "a sides b sides" complation though.

Yeah I've heard It's My Life now, it's cool. Not as good as their other stuff though. I'm gonna look for the "a sides b sides" compilation, I want to be sure to have heard every song they have released.

Even though Laughing Stock and Spirit Of Eden are really "my" kinda thing, I'm currently LOVING the popmusic of Colour Of Spring. Perfect balance between easy listening music and good song writing. It doesn't bore me and it's not cheesy.

no, literally,
i could spend several hours just talking about this group.
i REALLY like them...that said..
it's taken me until this year to get:
--------------------------------
spirit of eden
laughing stock
mark hollis - solo
missing pieces
(i dont have orang yet)..

and sorry to say, i don't care for any of them at all..

i got started on them, in the early 80's, yes i heard
'talk talk' and 'its my life', so i am totally biased towards
their early synth pop stuff....i actually LIKE the remix
album too..and have pretty much every single they've
ever put out......colour of spring is pretty much my
favorite album...(and they even have a track named
after my birthday 'april 5'...how do you like that?)...

i'm about to get the SACD 5.1 version of color of spring..
anyways... after mark hollis decided they should go into
a totally different musical direction, they lost me..

i know, it's still early, and i've barely listened to all the
latter albums.....but it just doesn't do ANYTHING for me,
and maybe it's my fault, i just don't have the time and
patience anymore to listen to piano tracks that go on
forever, hushed vocals, and maybe 1 minute of lyrics..

i'm not saying i only listen to or like their pop stuff,
i like 'living in another world' is a masterpiece, and have
made a 30+min version combining all the remixes together..

sorry mark hollis, your days of music were over a long time
ago, and i respect you make the music for yourself, but
don't expect people to care for it..

Re: Talk Talk

also, by the way, i have tons of rarities
from them..
(eg. the 3rd version 'why is it so hard' from the zazou soundtrack,
lifes what you make it (early mix), etc etc..
every remix on vinyl, and every cd-single too....) unfortunately
i don't have all my music with me, it is sitting in a house a few
thousand miles away...

i'm forcing myself to listen to their latter stuff...
although i did buy the remasters of their first two albums,
so at least i have something listenable from them..

That's cool, but keep in mind, when I first heard Laughing Stock I was like "meh" as well... Then I picked it up again a week ago (a year later) and it totally hit me. So maybe it needs some time :)

And anyway, Living In Another World indeed rocks!

Re: Talk Talk

Like yourself, Leon, I really like Colour of Spring for many reasons, including how it bridges synth-pop talk talk and later period talk talk. Great album, and the first Talk Talk album to reveal moments of genuine genius.

an album can be genius, but that does not mean that
it is good, or is likable...

everything i liked about talk talk, mark's voice,
the music, the layering, the keyboards, the guitars,
the eclectic sounds.....gone, gone, and gone, all gone..

where did it go? where are all the catchy tunes, where
can you hum the songs now...dum dum girl is one of their
most haunting songs ever.......such a shame, life's what you
make it....etc. etc.... song after song after song..they grew
with you....they marked a genius....

now i feel nothing, i can barely remember any of the new titles,
(and i am listening to them more), nothing stands out, nothing
to get excited about, no mixes.....where did it all go again..

no, everything does not have to be a hit, or have a video, or
be remixed...but back then they cared about the fans, and
released all kinds of material for their fans.. the live london
album is amazing, and a-sides b-sides is one of the most
amazing remix albums, rarities...

i know mark did not like the music industry, but biting the
hand that feeds you, and putting out such works did nothing
but alienate all the fans, and record companies..

if he was locked into a contract, i think it was his own fault,
and he should have split up the band, and went away separately
to do his own work, instead of dragging down the name of
'talk talk', and the band, and all the hard work and fans that
they had..

i am still a 'talk talk' fan, but no longer a 'mark hollis' fan..
