Portishead - Third.
from band website:
23 Jan 2008 We're pleased to announce that we'll be releasing our album, titled THIRD. on April 14th 2008. The album has 11 tracks and is 49 minutes 13 seconds long. --- oh yes. i will FIGHT/KNIFE anyone who has a problem with the title. |
Re: Portishead - Third.
i'll cheer dubman on in said fight/knifing!
i'm excited for this one. haven't heard much else about new stuff from old greats this year so this is a nice suprise for me. |
Re: Portishead - Third.
I hope it shows some development in their sound. I loved Dummy, but was slightly disappointed by the second album because it was so much of a more-of-the-same type of thing. I'm all for them still sounding like Portishead, but I do hope it doesn't sound like a bunch of tracks that could have been outtakes from Dummy again. It's a safe bet I'll buy it either way though...

Re: Portishead - Third.
I can't wait for fake leaks to appear for this release.
|
Re: Portishead - Third.
i'd rather it sound like Dummy outtakes than that shit that was posted on YouTube.
|
Re: Portishead - Third.
you mean the atp concert? i liked those :(
how are fake leaks going to appear when you need beth gibbons |
Re: Portishead - Third.
Dummy is still one of my "played" albums from time to time. I really really really hope this is going to be as good.

really? I actually quite liked some of the tracks... Someone recorded the second night, and the sound is much much better than the one's that were leaked/posted online from the first night (and the audience is quieter as well - there's little to no audience noise whatsoever during the actual tracks) anyone want me to upload those tracks? |
Re: Portishead - Third.
that would be grand.
you other people are fools, machine gun and paches are fantastic |

Re: Portishead - Third.
Excellent! Thank you!

Re: Portishead - Third.
I just got tiggits to see them at the Apollo in Hammersmith. They only went on sale today but I guess everyone on their mailing list got the chance to pre-purchase because the ones that I got that were apparently the 'best available' were for the Rear Circle Row X, seats 61-65! Bugger. Hope they crank the volume up.

Re: Portishead - Third.
Will d/l set later. Cheers!

Re: Portishead - Third.
i'm kinda both really looking forward to this release and also dreading it - i want it to be fantastic but deep down can't really believe it's going to be after so long...

yea - I know what you mean but expectations have gotten so high (for me at least) on this release, that they've pretty much 'topped-out' like... it's been so long, I'm just glad that they were able to get something done! |
Re: Portishead - Third.
Yeah, at least it's happening.. and Beth's album with Rustin Man was a great great album, so I think they might handle this.
If this one doesn't live up, it might be the preassure, and they go back in studio and make a fantastic album while no one is waiting for anything.. . |
Re: Portishead - Third.
I stopped waiting for Portishead a looooooong time ago. I remember they had their first album out at basically the same time that Tricky released Maxinquaye, and they both used the same base sample in Glory Box and Hell is Round the Corner. Because of that, I kind of equated them and waited for the next album from both of them. I got Tricky's Pre-Millennium Tension.....and waited for Portishead's next album. Then got Tricky's "Nearly God" album....and waited for Portishead's. When Portishead finally released their second album, Tricky was about to put out his fourth, had released a bunch of EPs, and then had a fifth full length the next year. I had already given up at that point. Granted, Tricky had some ups and downs, but he was exploring ideas and growing. That's why Portishead's second disappointed me so much. I, and most of their musical peers, had moved on musically, while they, after years, were still doing the same thing. They went so directly from innovators to stagnant. Can you tell that they really hurt me? :(
Oh well, like I said before, hopefully their sound has finally evolved after 11 years since their last full length release. |
Re: Portishead - Third.
well, as someone who came a little late to the party, i definitely think their self titled is a long distance away from their first album, and much much better too.
but i wasnt really expecting a third from them either, so i'm anticipating it, but my expectations as to how it'll sound are pretty neutral. i'm pretty sure it'll be at least good, if not worth listening to several several times. |

but i understand your doubts, which did happen with tricky for me. after listening to vulnerable i almost lost complete interest in tricky for a long time. the lyrics just reeked of teen agnst rock themes and the rhyme schemes were about on par with a 6 years olds. plus that new girl's contributions vocally and lyrically ruined it for me. |
Re: Portishead - Third.
Review in today's Observer here. Sounds promising :)

Re: Portishead - Third.
It's out there, still taking some time to take it all in, speechless in other words.

Re: Portishead - Third.
this album sucks. only people who weren't around for the release of Dummy think it's any good. the rest of us know it sucks.

I've had this album for a good few weeks now and I think it's very good and a lot better than I was expecting after such a long time. |
Re: Portishead - Third.
I wasn't around for the release of Dummy but I love that album and I enjoy Portishead (the album) in some places. I've heard Third once and it didn't really invite me to listen to it more. It might be a grower though, so I guess I should take a moment and listen to it some more.

Machine Gun is one of the most haunting, hypnotic things they've ever done. I wish the whole album was more like this.
