I'm pretty excited by this. Given that Star Trek is still popular enough to keep several cable channels on the air year to year it's amazing that a reboot of this universe didn't happen ten years ago. Since the fourth installment of this series all of the movies have been low budget glorified episodes so a proper movie with proper intentions could totally rule. The current budget is $120 mil.

Agree that STII,III, maybe IV had "epic" feels that most of the latter incarnations did not, note that ST1 was a rush job, because Disney beat Paramount to the punch with "The Black Hole", so they came up with the lame V-Ger premise (i guess it was at least topical in the late '70's).

That said, i really enjoy "First Contact"...very dark, has a good plot.

Re: Star Trek XI

First Contact was awesome but Insurrection and Nemesis were kind of crappy (well Nemesis had it's moments)
I did like Enterprise as a series as well.

Looking forward to this. Will check out the trailer later...

Re: Star Trek XI

I have never gotten into the whole Star Trek thing, but I've thought about trying many times.. Where to start? What to get that is good and a good starting point as well? The first movie would maybe be good, but i though I'd ask first, and if there are any trekkies here this might be the place.

Scott Warner 01-22-2008 01:51 PM

Re: Star Trek XI

The interesting thing about the first movie is that it's a total failure BUT it does feel like an epic movie. The production values are there but the script is not. This is in contrast to a movie like 'First Contact' where it's definitely has the writing in hand but the production values still feel slightly above those made for TV.

As for starting with Star Trek, I'm more of a fan of what it could be rather than what it is; I find the vast majority of the shows and movies to be deeply dorky. Ron Moore felt the same way and left his stint as a principle writer on the Trek shows to put together the reimagined Battlestar Galactica - I'm assuming that Paramount are hoping that J.J. Abrams can achieve similar revisionist but reinvigorating results. ALL OF THIS SAID, really you should start with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn - I don't think you'll find anyone, casual or Trekkie alike, who doesn't rate this as the best of the movies.

Re: Star Trek XI

yea - Wrath of Kahn is great...

and from what I remember - "Generations" & "First Contact" weren't too bad either, but I can't say that I've seen either in more than 5 years

and I've not seen either of the two more recent films

(I've always liked Star Trek the next generation more than any of the other shows)

King of Snake 01-23-2008 02:12 AM

Re: Star Trek XI

Yes Wrath of Kahn is great and (along with First Contact) is probably the darkest version of Trek. It's generally accepted among Trek fans that the even numbered movies are better than the odd numbered ones. So Kahn is nr II, nr IV, Voyage Home is quite fun and more tongue-in-cheek than the others. VI - The Undiscovered Country has some interesting political drama between the Klingons and the federation (very much a cold-war reference).

I guess Nemesis broke the spell of the even numbered movies being good. Esp if this new one (which will be XI) turns out to be good :)

First Contact was great.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who marks it up as one of the great ST movies. Lots of people pass it up as 'just another Next Gen bomb' but I actually bought the DVD of it and have seen it countless times. Excellent flick. :) I enjoyed Nemesis too.

I'm getting Wrath - Director's cut now. Not sure if it's my cup of tea though, but i'm looking forward to trying.

Re: Star Trek XI

Wrath of Kahn, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country were the best of the Star Trek films. I preferred the TNG series, but the only TNG film I'd rewatch is First Contact. I haven't seen Nemesis, but it sounds like it was another lack-luster TNG film..?

i'd be happy with just-above TV budgets if they'd use them on a DS9 film :(

First "real" trailer is now online:

Will this be the first really entertaining (not only I hope) ST movie ? It seems well started...

King of Snake 11-18-2008 06:26 AM

Re: Star Trek XI

well it certainly looks action packed. Still I think it all depends on how the characters are developed. Not sure what they're doing with young Spock for instance. The trailer has him looking quite...emotional. Isn't he supposed to have no emotions?

myrrh 11-18-2008 07:22 AM

Re: Star Trek XI

It looks like it may have potential, depending on the story etc. I am more interested in seeing Earth because that is something that we never really in the old ones.

But to be honest, I don't think it is going to touch Battlestar Galactica, which right now is probably the best Sci-Fi out there. I am totally hooked on it, and I think it blows the whole Star Trek storyline out of the water.

Of course, this will all change when the Star Wars TV show stars. Even still, after watching BG, they have a high standard to match.

i think he was half-Vulcan, half-human, so it's probably a daily struggle for him to stay "logical" ;)

Re: Star Trek XI

Most Star Trek movies have been great... First Contact is one of my favourite movies of all time.
But this looks more like a mindless action movie than a Star Trek movie. Of course, action is very important for Star Trek, but characterization, humor, dialoge and plot always had priority... First Contact was perfect in this regard.

However XI will suck... telling from the trailer, the major themes are ridiculous: "You can get it if you really want"? Spock's Human-Vulcan conflict? As if we hadn't seen those before... Even JJ Abrams admitted that it will be a action movie for the masses.
The bad CGI and the 'modern blueish' look that already destroyed DH4 won't help either...
And then this guy at the end of the trailer proclaims "the wait is over!"... This is even worse than the fucking CGI-mole that opened Indiana Jones 4.

I'm going to see it, but I'll expect nothing so I can't be disappointed.

Jafs 11-18-2008 10:47 AM

Re: Star Trek XI

I just take trailers for what they are. This one is, like others, made to bring people in theaters.

Nemesis was already more on action (if I remember well...), but was empty of everything. I thing no one wants that.

You're right about First Contact, that's a good movie, and maybe the best from ST, but there was this little something missing to make it "a great movie". But if I'm right, this is the only movie speaking about the discovery of human going distortion :D. That's a very good point !

+10000 :)

have been rewatching BG for the past couple of months, almost at the end of S3 now and very much looking forward to season 4!

Re: Star Trek XI

I can't do nothing but agree about BSG :D Seen that the 4th season will come in 2 packs, THIS is not so great.

But hey, stay realist, how can a stand alone movie can beat a series so well constructed than BSG ;)

Best trailer ever. I think the music is from the film, it doesn't sound familiar. I know they finished scoring the film nearly two months ago.

I have never had an interest in Star Trek, but this trailer's got me!

Re: Star Trek XI

This is the 9th movie right? So it should be IX?

To be honest I don't like the idea of Kirk being played by someone else - how many of Shatner's personal acting quirks and mannerisms have been integrated into our perception of that character?? But it's got Simon Pegg and John Cho in it so I guess I have to see it...

Re: Star Trek XI

Nope, it's the 11th of the series. First 6 were numbered and starred the original crew. 7 - 10 featured the Next Generation cast and didn't carry a number.

They're just calling this one Star Trek, right? Doesn't make sense to call it XI since the plot predates all the rest. i guess.

Re: Star Trek XI

Guess I missed two of them (goes to wikipedia) yep, only saw two of the ones with the TNG crew. Pretty glad that they never made with any of the Enterprise/Voyager crews because they really lost the plot at that point. The way I see it Star Trek is really meant to be kind of cornball and actor-driven (as opposed to character-driven)

Only a few day to go. I'll certainly go to the premiere tuesday night. Nobody here has seen it yet ?

It's still scoring 100% over at Rotten Tomatoes with 16 reviews in so far so the signs are definitely look good. Only 2 reviews so far over at Metacritic but both of them give it full marks too :)

Even if I've not seen the film yet, I can already say the soundtrack is pretty good. Giacchino's work is full of respect regards the previous scores by Goldsmith, Horner,...

Nice artwork too !

nice, I didn't know Giacchino was doing the soundtrack. I Love the soundtrack he did for The Incredibles :)

Re: Star Trek XI

so, anyone else seen it yet?

I found it to be pretty good. Good points: casting, effects, action and humour. Not so good points: story seemed to be a bit all over the place. Time travel is used again as an easy cop out for some of the incredibly improbable things happening. The bad guy didn't really have much of a story, background or relation to anything.

But hey this movie is about the crew of the enterprise and how they met. The rest is just there to keep things exciting. Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Chekov, Bones, Scotty, all are present and played convincingly and with a nice dose of humour without becoming parodies of themselves.
Nice to see a small part for Leonard Nimoy as old Spock too. Sadly no Shatner though...

NOT REALLY A SPOILER BUT TALKING BOUT THE MOVIE SO IF YOU HAVNT SEEN IT DONT READ ON!

I really enjoyed it and love all the little qualities that have been reborn in the new actors... the way kirk is and all. But i dont agree with what you sed above... because like you said the time travel thing is a bit of a cop out, and as a result this movie is infact a movie about how the crew never met... because of the whole alternate reality thing...im no big fan and maybe the series from way back did refer to this story bout time travel etc... but doesnt this pretty much disqualify anything that may have happened in the original series and allow for a completely new series of star trek movies where the writers are able to kill of anyone and do anything they like because this is an "alternate reality" from whats been established in the series?

So this cop out is indeed a exactly that, but an ingenius one which opens up a whole new series of possiblities. thus lots of money.

Very good movie..and lots of wow shots i especially love how you are given a very real space quality...like seing people and debris and all that..floating around during a battle

Jafs 05-11-2009 08:20 AM

Re: Star Trek XI

Of course I've seen it. I'm not totally satisfied with this. The movie is well produced and directed, actors are good, and there's a lot of humor going on, I enjoyed this. But I thought this was badly written, and there are some incohences than even the alternate time cannot explain (scientific matters,...). I'm not a trekkie, so I don't know every episode of the ST series.

SPOILERS

And why the fuck Nero's ship manage to cross the black hole one day, and not the other ? Why Abrams doesn't "let time" to some parts of his movie to evolve and impress us in another way than by a rythm inherited from movie clips ? (technical and director sensibility question, I admit). Did you people notice that this film has a lot of action, but how JJ manage to avoid some bigger scenes (budget question ?), like when the Enterprise didn't go distortion in the same time than the others, and when he arrives all the other Federation ships are destroyed ? I thought this was pretty clever.

I've heard recently than a removed scene from the film explained where Nero was during those 25 years. (God, all this time in the same ship with all those guys ? Argh !). This is a shame because this is one of the main questions I was wondering about when going out from the theater...

I'm also wondering what was this gaz place from where the Enterprise comes out aside Saturn. And don't say these are the rings, we can see them at the other side, in another axe.

If some astrodirties have some answers...
