Film of the year?

I haven't seen enough films this year, but from those that I have I can single out one and only one: No Country For Old Man.

This movie blew my mind. It has the meanest villain and the most confusing ending, leaving your lower jaw dropped and you eye lids narrowly closed. It's one of those movies that you must see a few times in order to consume the essence of the script.

Yeah, it is a no brainer really.

I dunno, There Will Be Blood hasn't hit the public proper yet. A close friend saw it last week and was pretty impressed by the film, more so than No Country.

yeah it's a pretty tough call between No Country and There Will Be Blood. I think not as many people will like BLOOD but those that do might like it more than COUNTRY. They're both great though and easily the best dramas I've seen this year. For me personally, I'll probably end up watching Country more but thinking Blood is better.

but that doesnt matter because everyone knows the movie of the year was TRANSFORMERS! yeah!!!

When is it coming out? If it doesn't get a wide release before the end of the year then it doesn't count. ;)

Ooooh, pretty tough.

No Country For Old Men was awesome.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was awesome.
Knocked Up was awesome.
Superbad was pretty good.
Control was pretty good.
King of Kong was fun.
Lars and the Real Doll was good but I don't need to see it again.

I haven't seen Juno yet which is supposed to be awesome. The Savages is supposed to be good too.

There was plenty of CG orgasm explosion horseshit this year that I slept through or didn't see. Transformers made me want to forget that I ever owned one (or thirty) of the toys.

BUT... There Will Be Blood has yet to be released. WE CAN'T BE SURE UNTIL THAT COMES OUT!

I know it's coming out in NY/LA on 12.26. From there, it's the standard staggered release date structure. It's not hitting Portland until January 11th, and I think we're 2nd/3rd week roll out which sucks!

Re: Film of the year?

Some of the good ones I've enjoyed this year have been the following:

Zodiac
Control
King of Kong
The Wind that Shakes the Barley
The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
No Country for Old Men
Blade Runner - Final Cut
I'm Not There
Eastern Promises
Sweeney Todd (I enjoyed it more than I thought I would)
Hot Fuzz
Michael Clayton

I'm still waiting on the big one for me, There Will Be Blood, as well as a few others I've missed like Lars and the Real Girl, Juno, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Into the Wild, and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

But yeah, that paul thomas anderson film is the one I think I've been most excited about this entire year, with the exception of Zodiac.

There will be blood now sits atop my list of the best films released in 2007 and for that matter the past couple years. I feel it's stronger and more important than No Country or anything else this year.

I haven't seen No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood, (and many others, but I doubt they'd be in my #1). So, of what I did see, it'd be Juno. Honorable mentions to Knocked Up, Hot Fuzz, and Ratatouille.

The comedy of the year for me was Hot Fuzz, hands down. So gloriously English in its humour, with a nod to the Hollywood action comedies.

I am looking forward to Sweeny Todd next year - Johnny Depp sings! :)

You'll be adding Persepolis to this list soon. Had me smiling ear to ear.

I did like The Lives of Others as well, liked it more than No Country For Old Men, I dont think it is "better" however.

Re: Film of the year?

"No country for old man" was good. But "Before the devil knows you are dead" deserves more praise in my opinion. It's soo freaking good. Both super disturbing.. and crazy good. But there is something in the theme of Before.. that make it so unique. Did anyone saw this? is like geek drama.
I could not see it again in a while though.. but what an awesome movie.

so:
1. Before the devil knows you are dead
2. Blade Runner: Final CUt
3. Control
4. The Savages
5. I'm not there

oh! Two Embraces by Enrique Begne, Sweeney Todd and I am Legend i like them too.

Re: Film of the year?

Hey I liked I am Legend as well :D

Mainly the shots of NYC overtaken by wildlife and total desolation.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is quite good, although the shattering glass bang cuts got a bit old for me. I still like the structure though and everyone's performances were stellar.

Lumet's still got it in him at what, age 80?? crazy.

saw that recently as well and thought it was pretty bad. The isolated stuff in the first half is pretty good (that scene when he has to get into the dark building to get his dog was very tense) but as soon as the monsters start appearing it all goes downhill with cheap scares and uninteresting plot.

Haha, yeah. But the zombies looked really crappy and digitalized. I thought it was cool when they laid a trap for Will though, I was not expecting that.

Is it too late to nominate "Ratatouille"? That was an enjoyable flick through and through! :)
