Book of Jam - Now available!

Log in to underworldlive.com to download the first issue of Book of Jam.

Let me reiterate again, though, Underworld. I will pay money for a print version. Maybe you guys can release a "Best of" next year or something?

Edit: Having had a few minutes to look over it, I love it! It really is a synthesis of a lot of the things we've seen on underworldlive.com 3.0 over the past few months. It gives context and explanation to all those things.

For example, we see some of Rick's high-rez nature photography that has appeared on the site and that Karl talked about briefly. Definitely looking forward to the Book of Nature.

We also see some more of the Abbey Road photos that have been popping up here and there. Including the mic picture on the second to last page that we first saw with the release of Phonestrap.

There's a continuation of Wayposts that Karl started on underworldlive.com. We've also certainly seen previews of the Book of Qi and the Book of Words on underworldlive.com.

More please! Looking forward to next month's Book of Tokyo.

a print version would be nice, but how many do you think
they could print, and how long would it take before it
comes out? oh well , i guess we're a patient bunch...

Just a silly dream for the future, but I'd love to have the first ten (or whatever) issues in a big coffee table book proudly displayed. Beautiful!

it pretty much lost me on the super bad letter spacing of the all caps... all JW knows is 'stunt typography'

i am into the marketing of an entire fleet of books, NOW that is great ART!

I understand your sentiment, though in fairness, JW does a lot more than that and has the design credentials to prove it. Agreed, with the RiverRun series and on, tomato has been in a phase with their typo, but i think one could point to other periods of the band where the logo or text had a familiar or oft-used style.

Take another look...there's sooo much good stuff in the writings and the photos/art of this first installment.
i need to print this out on glossy paper! Kudos to the band for their multimedia prowess!

Lots of love and thanks so much guys! Spoiled fans as per usual...

Love the linkage to Black Mountain & Brian Eno's generative music... two things that have defiantly been on the go alongside Oblivion With Bells for the past few months...

Late night, brain-blurring/brightening/bubbling web-browsing is what got me the guts to, at 3 in the morning, just order the tickets to NY and tell the girlfriend, 'September 14th. Central Park.' Trip of a lifetime.

I really envy and admire Underworld's devotion to the arts, and in today's world it's stuff like this that keeps me goin...

Keep up ta good work.

if i could kiss a PDF i would.

i pulled an image for my desktop at work (the one of karl lying on his back with a camera, oriented 90 degrees counter-clockwise) and one of my coworkers asked, "is that your husband?"

it was all i could do not to shout, "I WISH!" instead i said, "no that's a 50-year-old musical british dude that i worship." :D

I am agreeing with Dubman again - damn, that must be at least 3 times this year. :D

Testudo - it is a bit like looking at the Sistine Chapel and complaining about a particular brush-stroke that you don't like. I am no artist/designer and have never professed to be one, but surely one needs to view the piece as a whole, not just concentrate on one tiny aspect of it as being the measure for totality?

nah, it is a style. I am cool with calling things type art or type that is arty or whatever. Just don't call it typography, it brings me much pain when used improperly.

As for marketing and the new love of the niche. I love Underworld, though I think the current merch and sales of this and that and 'the others' are sad. so sad.

Re: Book of Jam - Now available!

seriously wtf. i understand how greeting something overwrought with an obvious statement that whittles it down to size and reduces it to its components is a nice way to deflect something, but not only is what warwicker doing beautiful in poetic and compositional ways, it also makes complete sense. it's not ever just wacky kerning/tracking, but also the audible and conceptual spaces between words, letters, settings: it's describing a space and a concept through pure type alone. the typeface is no longer the primary communicator of that, it becomes just as much part of the picture of idea and space. i honestly think it transcends good composition and expression into something poetic (hence typo-poetics) because it gets so nuanced and each detail and decision reveals something more, and it's vivid enough to be as much of a photograph of a place as ricks hi-def pics.

cant wait for the book.

you link us to a google search wherein the first article is written by an heirarchical douche from 1955 who has an endless wine analogy and could best be summed up by "know your place", based on his frequent refrences to overzealousness, the humility of the printer, and the sacralization of non-sensory, more intellectual pursuits at the expense of wanton expressiveness (which is mostly boxed authoritarianism to make the visual universe itself EZ-serv)
WHILE asserting that there's any sort of art in marketing?
that's a special sort of po-mo spin i could give kudos to if i could ever find the time to dust off THAT old hat.

is that english?

maybe it would help you to know that Glenn Gould is my favorite artist... and for all of his work.

the marketing statement is a joke. though i know some folks who would say other wise...

Does any have (or know where I can find these)? I have the first 3, but not the others...thanks!

And does any know if these ever existed as a physical version? I seem to remember something being listed for sale at 'Shibuya Shibuya, we face a shining future'.

There is one, Book of Jam 4.5 Whistlejacket, which didn't make it into the site reload in 2010/2011.

I've attached it here for posterity.

Wow thanks all for the quick reply.

I did not realise there were so many. I was thinking about getting them professionally printed, but with 700+ pages I am not so sure now!!

I like flicking through this art when I have a coffee (The Floating World, Tomato books etc) but I can't be arsed to pull out my laptop and scroll through a PDF!

For the Tokyo retrospective, they announced a Book of Book of Jam, but I don't think it ever came to fruition. The other two books did, but not that one.

I was disappointed that that Book of Jam Japanese book did not happen, but I've also been completely unable to find copies of the other books for sale online. If anyone has any leads, please PM me. Thanks!

You could try contacting Tomato, and see if they have any to sell:

I actually have spare copies of both - DM if you want to buy them. The John Warwicker book is absolutely stunning and deserves a worldwide release.

Must have missed that there was an 18th book in the middle of all that typing. I've got the rest at least!
