CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
If you're as annoyed as I am by the tracking on the live CD's then you might appreciate this. Here are instructions on how to re-track the shows into something logical, with the huge caveat that these instructions are for Macs, since I don't have Windows. If someone would like to write instructions for Windows, that would be great. I would guess that it would utilize something like EAC and foobar2k or CUE Splitter or something like that.
Setup ------- 1. Download and decompress X Lossless Decoder. You're looking for the GUI version in the Download section, probably named something like "xld-gui-2007917.tar.bz2" 2. Launch XLD and go to the "XLD" menu and choose "Preferences" 3. Select your Output format. This will be the final format of the music after you're done resplitting it. If you want a lossy format, choose MPEG-4 AAC or LAME MP3, and then click the Options button to choose your bitrate. If you want a lossless format, choose Apple Lossless or FLAC. If you want to burn it back to an audio CD, choose WAV. 4. Close the Preferences and quit XLD. 5. Download and decompress Max 6. Launch Max, and go to the "Max" menu and choose "Preferences" 7. Click the "Formats" tab. 8. Select WAVE from the "Available output formats" section and then click the + mark 9. Choose "Linear PCM, 16 bit little endian signed integer" and click OK. 10. Make sure there is a checkmark next to "WAVE (Linear PCM)" in the "Configured output formats" 11. Click on the "Ripper" tab. 12. Check the box for "Rip to a single file". If you are really paranoid about your CD ripping quality, you can change the Ripper from "Basic Ripper" to either "Comparison Ripper" or "cdparanoia". 13. Close the Preferences and quit Max. Re-tracking instructions --------------------------- 1. Launch Max 2. Insert your CD. A window for the CD should automatically pop-up in Max. Click "Select All" and then click the "Encode" button. 3. After it's done ripping and then encoding, you can quit Max. You'll need to find the WAV file on your hard drive. The file should be called "00 Multiple Tracks.wav" It's probably in the Music folder inside your Home directory, probably inside a folder called "Underworld" or "Unknown Artist". 4. Launch TextEdit. 5. In a new document, go to the "Format" menu and choose "Make Plain Text" 6. Copy a CUE sheet from below and paste it into the document. 7. Go to the "File" menu and choose "Save As..." Name the file "somefilename.cue" and save it. TextEdit will ask you to confirm that you want to use the .cue file extension. 8. Launch XLD. 9. Go to the "File" menu and choose "Open". Open up the CUE file you just saved. 10. If it asks you to "Choose file to split", navigate to the WAV file you created earlier and choose that. 11. You should now see a list of the tracks. Click "Decode" to split the tracks and encode them in the audio format you set up earlier. 12. You can now find your newly split tracks in the same folder as your WAV file. If you split them into WAVs in order to burn them back to an audio CD, make sure you set the pre-gap for each track to 0 seconds in your audio CD burning application. |

Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
Since I was just about to start ripping my LHN CDs that just arrived in the post, I say THANK YOU for your effort and hard work in doing this. Couldn't have come at a better time. :)
Edit: I haven't tried it yet, but a solution for Windows might be to use EAC for both ripping and splitting. In particular, the "Tools" -> "Split WAVs by cue sheet" option in the menu should do the job once the WAV files have been generated. |
Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
yeah,
thanks for all your work.. i'll check back for updates for the remaining discs.. later -1 |
Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
Well, I felt the tracking for the remaining discs was fine as-is. It's not "perfect," but it doesn't bother me enough to re-do them. You or anyone else can go ahead and do them though, if you want.

Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
If you rip the entire CD as a single WAV file, you should be able to burn it as a (re-tracked) CD without any additional steps in between.
Just configure your burning software to use the giant WAV file and Todd's CUE sheet together. No need to make little individual WAV files. Speaking of how to rip a CD as one giant WAV file on Windows: I made this tutorial back in the day for RTSR to use. (Surprisingly it made it to #2 in google results if you search for "eac tutorial" !! :)) http://terrarum.net/rtsr/eac/eac0.html The tutorial was only meant for making 1-to-1 copies of CD's. It ONLY covers ripping a CD as one giant wav file. That's why things like gap detection, etc are not important in this tutorial. I don't know how accurate it is anymore, because I haven't ripped any CD's since that tutorial was made... years ago! |

Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
Awesome work, TheBang! I've just received a few of the Liveherenow discs, and yeah, the splits are just silly. I mean, why split out the outtro of Moaner (the Amsterdam gig), when for years it's expected that there will be a dropped beat before it all kicks in again with the cowbell and phased bassline? The worst is the inter-disc splits, when a song like TMO is coming in hard, but NO, you must stop and change discs first!:p
But, to their credit, Liveherenow have given us some A+ quality recordings of the current tour! Nice to compare from night-to-night what the boys are up to. For example, "Jumbo" is quite different from gig to gig...sometimes the "I'm brilliant" vocoded clip is prominent at first, sometimes Karl plays a lot of guitar, sometimes the Moroder-esque bassline is withheld till late, sometimes it comes up early to big cheers. Nomatter...each night has its surprises. Lovely to hear Spoonman resurrected, new live versions of Little Speaker and Peach Tree, and the shuffling...NUXX and PG early in the sets, etc.:) |

Re: CUE sheets for Live Here Now CD's
Yeah, the Koln recording is like that for me. Splitting up You Do Scribble just as it's getting going just kills me, especially when it could've fit easily in its entirety on disc 2.
